Centre-Spine Staircases
These staircases create a modern, floating effect with a single steel beam for support. We design them to maximize light and space, using solid oak treads and toughened glass balustrades for a clean, open feel.

During installation, each solid oak tread is carefully bolted to the custom-fabricated brackets on the steel spine.

The combination of warm oak, sleek glass, and industrial steel creates a balanced and modern look for this home's main staircase.
About Centre-Spine Staircases
When you choose a centre-spine design, the structural strength comes from a heavy-duty steel beam tucked directly beneath the treads, which eliminates any bounce or movement. We use 60mm to 80mm thick solid oak or ash for the steps, ensuring they feel substantial underfoot while keeping the overall look light and airy.
Why these designs work
These staircases open up the ground floor by eliminating bulky side supports. Because the weight is supported by a central steel mono-stringer, the steps appear to float. This design is ideal for entryways where you want to maintain a sense of openness rather than blocking sightlines with traditional walls or closed risers.
Construction details
We weld the central steel spine in our workshop to ensure rigidity. This beam is anchored directly into the concrete slab for stability. The treads are crafted from solid hardwood, typically American White Oak or Ash, finished with commercial-grade lacquer to protect against daily wear. If you prefer a modern finish, we install 12mm toughened clear safety glass panels with stainless steel standoffs, creating a seamless balustrade that keeps the space feeling bright.
Our approach
Since we handle everything from fabrication to installation, we can adjust the dimensions to suit your specific floor plan. We do not work from templates or standard catalogue sizes. Every project begins with a site visit to verify the stair radius and headroom, followed by 3D modeling to ensure the finished piece fits your home exactly.
