The Fabrication Process: How I Build Your Staircase

Every staircase I make is crafted entirely in my workshop, from the initial steel welding to the final polish on the solid oak treads. There is no mass production here; just careful, manual work designed to fit your space exactly.

Solid oak treads for a spiral staircase, shaped and finished in the workshop. They are laid out here for a final quality check before being packed for site delivery.

A stack of raw oak treads, cut and shaped with the distinctive curve needed to form the spiral. The next step is sanding and finishing.

This shows the raw, unfinished oak treads after they have been cut to shape. You can see the detail of the walnut inlay before the final sanding and oiling.

About this collection

When you see these photos, you are looking at the work at the halfway point. I cut every steel component and shape every oak tread right here in the workshop in Clonroche. By handling the entire fabrication process myself, I ensure the structural connections are precise and the wood grain matches perfectly before anything is loaded for delivery to your home.

Building a staircase that lasts requires more than just standard templates. My process begins with a detailed site survey and 3D modeling to understand the specific geometry of your space. Whether I am welding a steel mono-stringer for a floating staircase or crafting spiral treads with walnut inlays, every element is made from scratch.

The Workshop Approach

I source high-grade steel and solid American White Oak or Teak. The steel structure is engineered for rigidity—especially the central poles and box-section beams—and finished with anti-rust primers and durable spray paint. On the woodworking side, I focus on the joints and the finish, applying three coats of commercial-grade PU lacquer to ensure the treads can withstand daily traffic while keeping their look.

Why it Matters

Because I fabricate everything on-site at my workshop in Co. Wexford, I have total control over the tolerances. There are no outsourced parts that do not fit; every tread and railing is aligned to match the exact curve or span of your staircase. This approach means I can integrate details like walnut inlays or specific glass balustrade requirements without compromising the structural integrity of the build. If you have a specific space constraint or a non-standard layout, this custom fabrication route ensures you get a staircase that actually fits.
