From Workshop to Home: My Custom Furniture Process
I do not just build furniture; I construct it piece by piece in my Clonroche workshop. Here is how raw birch plywood, solid walnut, and oak become the finished, fitted pieces you see in your home.

About From Workshop to Home
You might see a finished drinks cabinet, but the real story is in the structure. I build the carcass from high-grade Birch Plywood because it holds its shape better than standard timber, and I use solid American Walnut for the visible framing to ensure the piece ages gracefully. Everything I assemble in the workshop is checked for fit before it ever reaches your house, so the installation at your place is a final verification rather than a guessing game.
Behind the Build
Every commission I take begins on the workbench in my Clonroche workshop. Unlike mass-produced furniture that relies on particle board or veneer, my process is rooted in structural integrity.
Why Birch Plywood?
For the carcass of fitted cabinetry, I exclusively use Birch Plywood. It is incredibly stable and dense, meaning it will not warp or sag under the weight of books, heavy spirit bottles, or glassware. When I frame this in solid walnut or oak, the result is a piece of furniture that feels substantial to the touch.
From Sketch to Installation
- Planning: We start with a conversation and a sketch tailored to your specific alcove or wall.
- Assembly: I handle everything from the first clamp to the final coat of two-pack lacquer. This finish is critical—it provides water and heat resistance, which is non-negotiable for a home bar unit.
- The Details: Whether it is a pull-out drawer for spirits with solid oak fronts, or an integrated LED strip routed into the shelves, these are not just aesthetic choices. They are functional decisions based on how you actually plan to use the space.
