Learn Goddess Saree Draping Techniques
Master the art of dressing deities. Learn to build the base structure and create those perfect, majestic circular pleats for your Varamahalakshmi pooja at home.
This video gives a preview of what you will learn in my workshop. We start with the basics, including how to assemble the kalash, coconut, and stand to create a stable base for the saree draping.
A key step in the process is creating the lower pleats, as shown here. In my class, I teach the technique to achieve this wide, fanned-out shape that forms the foundation of the idol's majestic appearance.
About Goddess Saree Draping Workshops
You might think getting that perfect circular fan shape on an idol is just about folding the fabric, but it is actually about the base. In my workshops, we start with the structure—ensuring the Kalash, coconut, and wooden base are rock-solid. Without a stable foundation, the heavy silk saree will sag, no matter how well you pleat it. I will show you how to build that secure, anatomically correct structure so your Ammavaru looks pristine for the entire festival.
Building Your Skills
The goal of my workshop is to take the guesswork out of idol draping. We go beyond just pinning the saree; we focus on the foundation that makes the drape stand out.
What we cover in the workshop:
- Structure Construction: We look at how to select the right Kalash and coconut size, and how to create limb structures using basic materials to give your idol a realistic, graceful form.
- Heatless Pleating: I teach my signature technique for achieving those wide, fanned-out circular pleats without damaging your expensive silk sarees with pins or heat.
- Securing the Look: Learn how to arrange the saree so it holds its shape securely through the entire pooja, even with movement or decoration changes.
Hands-on Practice
This isn't a lecture. You will work with studio mannequins and practice sarees to get a feel for the tension and weight of the fabric. I will guide you through the process of box folding and fan pleating step-by-step. By the end of the session, you will not just know how to drape; you will understand why certain materials work better and how to troubleshoot common issues like sagging or uneven pleats.
Whether you are preparing for Varamahalakshmi or want to master this skill for temple decorations, I provide all the tools, practice materials, and the certification you need to confidently style deities on your own.
