Sparring is not about fighting; it is about discipline, precision, and control. In our dojo, we practice kumite with full safety gear to build focus and confidence, ensuring a controlled environment for every student.

A controlled sparring session between two junior students. They start and end with a respectful bow, demonstrating that kumite is about skill and sportsmanship, not fighting.

A student executes a clean high kick during a sparring match. You can see both participants are wearing full protective gear, which is mandatory for all kumite practice in my dojo.

Our team of young fighters, all geared up and ready for sparring practice. We teach them to be confident and controlled, focusing on technique over force.

About Testing Our Skills: Sparring (Kumite)

Here, sparring—or kumite—is strictly about technical precision and control, never aggression. Every student wears full protective gear, including head guards and gloves, from day one. You won't see wild swings here; I teach my students that the real victory is a clean, well-timed point, not hurting an opponent. It is a safe, supervised space where students learn to manage distance and timing, whether they are training for a belt exam or preparing for a national tournament.

The Art of Control

In my dojo, kumite is not about who is stronger; it is about who has the better focus. When we step into the sparring area, the first thing we emphasize is safety. Every student, from the smallest junior to my senior black belts, wears full protective gear—helmets, chest guards, and gloves are mandatory. This is not optional because I need you to learn without the fear of injury.

What to Expect

We start slow. I always tell my students, nidhanakke kandro (slowly, dear). You will learn basic kihon (fundamentals) and kata (forms) long before you trade a single blow in sparring. Once you are ready, we focus on:

  • Point Sparring: Developing speed and accuracy to land a clean technique.
  • Reaction Drills: Training your body to respond instinctively to an attack.
  • Strategic Positioning: Learning how to hold your ground and manage distance in the ring.

Training at our Jnanakshki School Ground location in RR Nagar is intense, but it is built on a foundation of mutual respect. We bow before we start, and we bow when we finish. This discipline carries over from the ring to your daily life, teaching you to handle challenges with a calm mind. Whether you are training for state-level competitions or just want to build your self-defense skills, you will find a supportive, family-like environment here.
