How to Prepare for Your Hair Transplant: Expert Tips
Getting ready for a transplant is not just about showing up on the day. It is about preparing your scalp and your health so your new grafts actually take root and thrive.
In this detailed video, I explain how to prepare for your hair transplant. I cover everything from increasing protein intake and checking vitamin levels to controlling medical conditions like diabetes and blood pressure.
This video provides a comprehensive guide on pre-operative preparation for a hair transplant. I discuss the importance of nutrition, medical check-ups, and scalp preparation to ensure the best possible outcome.
About Preparing for Your Transplant
Think of your scalp like farmland. Before we sow the seeds, the soil needs to be healthy. If your scalp is too thin or blood circulation is poor, the grafts will not survive well. That is why I often recommend a specific scalp serum or nutritional adjustments weeks before your procedure, not just for better growth, but to ensure your skin is thick enough to hold the implants properly.
Nutrition and Health Checks
Your hair is built from protein. If you are a vegetarian, you are likely protein-deficient. I tell my patients to increase their intake significantly because your body needs those building blocks for healing. We also see widespread Vitamin B12 and D3 deficiencies in metro cities. Get these tested, because low levels affect your hair quality and post-op recovery.
If you have diabetes, we need strict control. Your HbA1c must be below 6.5. If it is higher, we do not proceed. It is risky and results will not be stable.
The Mandatory Pre-Op Checklist
- Cardiac Safety: If you are under 35, an ECG and standard blood tests are essential. If you are 40 or older, a TMT (treadmill test) is non-negotiable. With cardiac issues rising among young men, we do not compromise on fitness.
- Blood Pressure: High BP leads to bleeding during surgery, which makes graft placement difficult. Get it controlled with your local physician before your date.
- Habits: Stop smoking and tobacco usage at least two weeks before the surgery. Nicotine constricts blood vessels, which can kill your new grafts.
The Night Before and Day Of
- Wear a button-down shirt. You cannot pull anything over your head for a week.
- Keep your nails trimmed.
- Plan for seven days of rest. A transplant is not just a lunch-break procedure; your body needs time to settle.
Send me your scalp photos on WhatsApp. We will give you a free, honest assessment and, if needed, a prescription to boost your scalp health before you even book a date.
