About The Mountain Home: A Serene Retreat
We addressed the specific challenges of a high-altitude climate by integrating a stone-clad fireplace and using solid wood for ceilings and furniture, ensuring the space remains naturally warm and inviting throughout the seasons.
Designing for the hills requires more than just aesthetics; it requires an understanding of insulation, lighting, and material longevity. In this Mukteshwar project, we focused on maximizing natural light through large, floor-to-ceiling windows while creating intimate, cozy zones to counter the open-plan layout.
Key design interventions included:
- Vertical Space Optimization: We utilized the double-height ceiling to create a grand, airy living area, while simultaneously installing a custom-built bookshelf under the staircase. This turned a typically dead, transitional zone into a highly functional library.
- Climate-Appropriate Materials: We relied on solid wood for joinery and flooring, which provides better thermal properties than engineered boards in mountain settings. The stone cladding around the fireplace was sourced locally to ground the interior in the surrounding landscape.
- Custom Furniture Manufacturing: Every piece of furniture, from the living room sofa to the bedroom bedframes, was built in our own workshop in Noida. This allowed us to control the quality of the finish and ensure the dimensions were perfectly suited to the villa's unique architectural angles.
- Accent & Character: To balance the rustic wood and stone, we introduced bold floral wallpapers and jewel-toned soft furnishings in the bedrooms. This adds a layer of comfort and modern visual interest, preventing the home from feeling too monochromatic or rigid.
