The Soul of the Craft
Block printing is more than a service, it is a living history. At Amoha Prints, we celebrate the tradition, the beauty of manual imperfections, and the connection between the artisan and the fabric.
Did you know that block printing is over 2,000 years old? This ancient craft has a rich history that spans continents. When I print on fabric today, I feel connected to that long line of artisans who came before me.
The ink I use is more than just color. It is mixed by hand from organic materials, carrying a memory of the earth. Because it is not a synthetic, uniform substance, no two impressions are ever exactly the same, making each print a visible memory.
What you hold in your hands is not fragile, it is living. A wooden block is a tool that breathes with history and potential. It is my passion to share this living art with you.
These blocks are not just tools. They represent the pause between art and touch, the moment where a design becomes a physical impression. They are the heart of this craft.
To hold a block is to hold time. This simple tree block, when pressed onto fabric, connects us to the history of the wood it was carved from and the generations of artisans who perfected this technique.
About The Soul of the Craft
When we press a block, it is not just about placing color on fabric. We mix our pigments from organic sources, and because we do not use high-pressure machines, every impression carries a slight variation in pressure and ink density. If you are looking for mass-produced uniformity, this is not it. But if you want a textile piece that shows the genuine touch of a printer's hand, that is exactly what we do.
Our process begins with the block itself. We do not use laser cutting. Instead, every design is hand-chipped onto seasoned Sagwan (teak) wood by artisans with over 30 years of experience. This manual chipping creates depths and ridges that a machine simply cannot replicate. Once carved, the wood is soaked in mustard or linseed oil for 48 hours to preserve its health and prevent cracking.
When it comes to the fabric, we focus on small-batch production that respects the material. Whether we are working with delicate Chanderi silk or sturdy organic cotton, we perform a pre-wash to manage shrinkage. We use azo-free, eco-friendly pigments mixed in-house, ensuring the colors are safe for the skin and the environment.
Because this is a manual process, each print is unique. You might see a faint smudge or a slight misalignment in the repeat. For us, these are not mistakes, they are the fingerprints of the craft. They prove that a person, not an automated system, made your fabric. If you value this slow, intentional approach to textile printing, we would love to collaborate on your next project, whether it is for a fashion label, home linen collection, or a unique event piece.
