Chasing Light and Shadow: Cinematic Delhi Street Photography
I capture the city when the light hits just right. This collection is where Delhi’s architecture meets stark contrast, focusing on silhouettes and the quiet poetry of street life in black and white.
A worker sorts spices in a patch of sunlight at Khari Baoli, Asia's largest spice market. The dramatic lighting and the text overlay make this a powerful introductory image to the series.
A black and white shot of a man walking through a dark alley in Old Delhi, illuminated by a ray of sunlight. The strong contrast between light and shadow creates a powerful, cinematic mood.
A cycle-rickshaw driver pedals through a dark lane, his form highlighted by a sliver of light. This black and white image captures the daily toil and quiet dignity of workers in Old Delhi.
A laborer carries a heavy sack on his shoulder through the corridors of the Khari Baoli spice market. The soft, directional light models his form and conveys the physical effort of his work.
A young worker crouches in the light, sifting through a large pile of dried red chilies. The details of the spices and the focused expression of the worker are highlighted in this B&W frame.
Laborers carry heavy sacks through the crowded lanes of the spice market. This candid black and white photo captures the relentless energy and hard work that defines Khari Baoli.
A black and white photo of an auto-rickshaw driver taking a break at night, his face illuminated by the light of his phone. The image captures a quiet, modern moment of rest.
An overhead shot of a lone traveler walking on a train platform at night. The single light source casts a long, dramatic shadow, creating a feeling of solitude and journey.
A first-person perspective in black and white, looking down at a discarded mannequin hand on the asphalt of Sarojini Market. It's a strange and surreal detail found amidst the chaos.
A young boy sells bubbles and cotton candy in the crowded Sarojini Market. This black and white shot captures his hustle, with a bubble perfectly framing his mouth.
About Chasing Light & Shadow
I rely entirely on natural light, which means we schedule sessions around specific times like sunrise in Old Delhi or late afternoon for those long, dramatic shadows. If you want this high-contrast look, we need to pick a location where the architecture interacts with the sun to create the geometry you see in my gallery.
When I shoot in black and white, the goal is not just to remove color. It is to focus on the grit, the textures of the spice markets, and the raw emotion of the street. Whether we are navigating the winding alleys of Khari Baoli or the ghats in Varanasi, my focus remains on the interplay of sun and shade.
This aesthetic works best for those who want an honest, documentary-style record rather than polished, commercial portraits. We will walk through your chosen heritage sites or local markets, and I will frame the surroundings to highlight the subject within that landscape. These images are high-contrast, moody, and intentionally cinematic, using my Fujifilm X-Series gear to catch those blink-and-you-miss-it moments.
My Approach
- No Artificial Lighting: We use the sun as our only source, meaning flexibility in scheduling is key.
- Natural Interaction: I do not ask for stiff poses. We walk, we observe, and I capture you interacting with the environment.
- Post-Processing: I personally edit each frame to retain the deep blacks and bright whites that define this style.
If you have a specific location in mind, let me know. I scout locations that have distinct architectural lines to maximize the potential for light and shadow play.
