Understand Your Body: Dosha & Agni
Identifying your Prakriti is the first step to feeling like yourself again. Let's decode your unique constitution so you can stop guessing what your body needs and start nourishing it properly.
Understanding your unique body type, or 'dosha', is the first step towards true health. In my consultations, I help you discover whether you are Vata, Pitta, or Kapha and create a personalized food plan that brings your body and mind into natural balance.
Why does knowing your 'Prakriti' or body type matter? It is your personal guide to the ideal diet, lifestyle, and wellness practices tailored just for you. When you live in alignment with your dosha, you unlock steady energy, health, and inner harmony.
The Vata dosha is composed of air and ether, making it light, dry, and creative. If you have a Vata constitution, you may have dry skin and feel restless, so I recommend grounding practices and warm, nourishing foods to maintain balance.
The Pitta dosha is made of fire and water, giving it hot, sharp, and focused qualities. Pitta types are often ambitious but can be quick-tempered. I advise cooling foods and a calm environment to soothe this inner fire.
The Kapha dosha combines earth and water, resulting in stable, heavy, and nurturing characteristics. To balance Kapha's tendency towards lethargy, I suggest invigorating activities and light, stimulating foods to boost energy.
A Vata-balancing diet focuses on warm, grounding, and cooked foods. I recommend incorporating root vegetables, whole grains like oats and rice, and warming spices such as ginger and cinnamon to counteract Vata's cool and dry nature.
For the fiery Pitta dosha, a cooling and calming diet is essential. I suggest fresh fruits, leafy greens, and hydrating foods like cucumber and coconut, while avoiding overly spicy or acidic meals that can increase internal heat.
To balance the earthy Kapha dosha, I recommend a diet that is light, stimulating, and energizing. This includes light grains like quinoa, legumes, and warming spices like black pepper and ginger to stimulate a naturally slower metabolism.
Eating for your dosha is a cornerstone of my Ayurvedic counselling. This infographic provides a starting point for understanding how to nourish your specific body type, whether it's Vata, Pitta, or Kapha, to align with your body's natural rhythm.
'Agni' is the Sanskrit word for your digestive fire. It's the energy responsible for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste. A strong Agni is the foundation of good health, and my guidance focuses on keeping it balanced.
About Understand Your Body: Dosha & Agni
Most people try to fix digestion or energy with generic diets, but that rarely works because your body is unique. For example, if you are a Vata type, a raw salad might actually leave you bloated, while a Pitta type might thrive on it. My consultation helps you stop the trial-and-error cycle by identifying your specific Agni (digestive fire) and Dosha balance so you know exactly which foods and routines will actually support your system.
Your Body's Blueprint: Prakriti
Ayurveda is not a one-size-fits-all system. Your Prakriti is your inherent constitution, determined at birth. It dictates your physical strengths, mental tendencies, and your susceptibility to specific imbalances.
- Vata: Air and ether. You might be creative and energetic, but prone to anxiety, dry skin, and digestive irregularity.
- Pitta: Fire and water. You are likely sharp and ambitious, but can get overheated, impatient, or prone to inflammation.
- Kapha: Earth and water. You are stable and nurturing, but might struggle with lethargy, congestion, or weight gain.
The Role of Agni
Think of Agni as your metabolic engine. If your Agni is balanced (Uttama), you digest food efficiently and wake up feeling light. If it is weak (Avara), your body cannot properly break down nutrients, leading to 'aam' (toxins). This is why you might feel heavy, bloated, or constantly tired despite 'eating healthy'.
What Happens in a Consultation?
Whether we meet in my Mumbai clinic or via video call, the process is straightforward:
- Nadi Pariksha: I assess your pulse to read your current state and deep-seated imbalances.
- Root Cause Analysis: We look at your history, your daily routine, and your typical stress triggers.
- Action Plan: You receive a structured guide. This includes specific food swaps (e.g., Jowar vs. Wheat), spices for your kitchen pharmacy, and simple lifestyle tweaks for your sleep and stress management.
My goal is to give you a roadmap you can follow, not a restrictive set of rules you will abandon in a week. Let’s identify your dosha and get your Agni burning bright.
