Graphite Portrait Sketches with Subtle Color Accents

I add small, vibrant splashes of color to my graphite drawings to make key details pop. A bindi, a scarf, or clothing accents can bring a whole new life to a classic black and white portrait.

About Art with a Touch of Color

When I sketch, I stick to graphite for the base because it captures shadows and textures best. But sometimes, a portrait needs more personality. I use vibrant, high-quality pencils to highlight specific details like a bindi, a scarf, or jewelry, turning a standard black and white sketch into something that feels deeply personal without losing the realistic look.

A lot of people ask me if adding color ruins the classic look of a graphite sketch. In my experience, it does the opposite when used carefully. My technique is to layer professional-grade graphite for the skin and hair, ensuring the realism stays intact, and then apply color as a calculated highlight. It is a strategic choice. If you are gifting a portrait, adding color to the clothing or a traditional mark makes the subject stand out instantly.

I use high-quality, acid-free cartridge paper for all these commissions, so the colors remain bright and the graphite does not smudge. Before I ship your artwork from my studio in Kalyan, I treat the whole piece with a fixative spray to lock in both the shading and the color pigments. Whether it is a traditional portrait with a red bindi or a modern look with a bright shirt, the color is there to tell a story, not to distract from the drawing.

Send me the reference photo you have in mind and tell me which part you want highlighted. I will always look at the photo first to confirm if the color balance will work with the composition.

I'm Shivam from Kalyan. Art is my world and everything you see on this page comes straight from my desk. I don't believe in over-complicating things, I just look at a photo and sketch what I see, paying attention to every line.
