Classic Graphite Portraits: Hand-Drawn Realistic Sketches
Timeless, hand-sketched memories. I use professional-grade graphite and charcoal to capture likeness with precision, ensuring every portrait tells your story authentically.
This video shows the shading process for a commissioned individual portrait. Using different grades of graphite pencils, I build up layers to create realistic contours and capture the subject's expression. This classic black and white sketch style offers a timeless and personal piece of art.
Here is a look at the detailed process behind the portrait of Shree Bharathi Tirtha Mahaswamiji. I used a reference photo on my phone and employed blending tools to achieve smooth gradients, paying close attention to the intricate details of his attire and serene expression.
A hand-drawn graphite portrait makes for an unforgettable gift. This piece was commissioned for an engagement ceremony, and the video captures the beautiful moment it was presented to the couple. It is a privilege to create art that becomes part of such a happy memory.
About Classic Graphite Portraits
My work is rooted in precision, not improvisation. For every commission, I use the grid method to ensure absolute anatomical accuracy, capturing the likeness of your loved ones on archival-quality, 200 GSM acid-free paper. Once the shading is complete, I seal the artwork with a matte fixative to prevent smudging, ensuring the piece stays sharp and preserved for years to come.
When you choose a graphite portrait, you are choosing a medium that strips away distractions to focus entirely on expression and form. I specialize in turning reference photos into detailed, honest representations.
My Process
I do not take shortcuts. Every piece begins with a grid-based structural layout to establish perfect proportions before I begin shading. I use a range of graphite and charcoal pencils to build depth, creating smooth gradients that bring skin tones and textures to life. The final result is a high-contrast, black-and-white piece that emphasizes the character and emotion of the subject.
Material & Longevity
I work exclusively on heavy-duty, acid-free cartridge paper (approx. 200 GSM). This thickness prevents buckling and allows for multiple layers of shading. Because graphite can smudge if handled improperly, I finish every completed portrait with a professional-grade matte fixative spray. This seals the graphite to the paper, preserving the integrity of the details.
Ordering & Delivery
Whether you are commissioning a single portrait, a couple's sketch, or a sensitive memorial piece, I offer options from standard A4 to A3 sizes. If you are in Bengaluru, I provide a basic synthetic wood frame with glass. For outstation orders, I pack your artwork securely in a rigid PVC tube to ensure it arrives at your doorstep in perfect condition. If you have a specific reference photo that is old or complex, let me know, and we can discuss the best approach for the commission.
