We combined the airy, sun-drenched spirit of a Californian hacienda with the warm, grounded texture of Indian craftsmanship for this Bengaluru residence. It is a home built for slow living, where every corner tells a story.

This video captures the essence of the Earthy Hacienda home. It's a space that effortlessly blends California casual with Indian rootedness, creating a layered, elegant feel that slowly unfolds as you walk through.

The vibe of this home is unmistakable from the moment you step in. Soft arches connect the common spaces, leading you toward a stunning framed custom mural that sets a calm, modern, and layered tone.

The informal living space features a traditional Indian swing, or 'jhoola', which adds a playful and rooted element. The room opens up to a garden, blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors.

Seen through an archway, the informal living room showcases a mix of comfortable seating, including a rust-colored sofa and a modern swing. The wood-paneled ceiling adds warmth and texture to the space.

The open-plan living and dining area is zoned diagonally to create flow and openness. A cane-fronted credenza provides storage and adds a touch of natural texture, complemented by botanical art prints.

Earth tones carry through the home, connecting the living spaces across both levels. This formal living area uses soft beiges and natural textures to feel warm and inviting while retaining a light, airy presence.

Natural light and indoor plants are key elements in our designs. In this living room, a large fan palm and sheer curtains create a soft, sun-drenched corner that feels peaceful and connected to nature.

About The Earthy Hacienda: California Casual with Indian Roots

The secret to the flow of this home was zoning the large, open-plan living area diagonally. By placing the traditional Indian 'jhoola' in the informal zone and angling the seating to face both the garden and the interior, we carved out distinct pockets of intimacy without closing off the space. It gives you that breezy Californian feeling while keeping the grounded, lived-in character of an Indian home.

This double-height living area is a perfect example of how I use architecture to shape light. The skylights and large windows flood the space with sunlight, creating shifting patterns throughout the day and connecting the home to the sky.8
I love creating modern interpretations of the traditional Indian courtyard. Here, reclaimed wooden pillars and a terracotta tile roof frame a central green space, making for a grand yet welcoming entrance that feels rooted in heritage.
This modern puja room is designed as a tranquil, sacred space within the home. The curved, sunken seating area, warm backlighting, and traditional floor tiles create a serene spot for prayer and reflection.
Bold choices can define a home. The vibrant turmeric-yellow oxide flooring brings immense warmth to this space, beautifully contrasting with the cool grey tones and connecting the multi-level living areas to the lush green balcony outside.

This wide view of the living room captures the essence of the home's design. I used arched openings and layered lighting to create a sense of procession and discovery, transforming a simple passage into an experience.19
The dining area is defined by handcrafted wood veneer pendants and Pierre Jeanneret-inspired cane chairs. These elements bring together mid-century design wisdom and a timeless, organic aesthetic for intimate gatherings.
The kitchen in this villa balances bold geometry with natural grace. I used olive green tiles for a pop of color, framed by reeded glass and warm wood cabinetry, with a floating shelf that adds architectural interest.
