About A Glimpse into the VOSD Sanctuary

People often ask why we don't rush an ambulance to every street rescue. The reality is that VOSD operates as a long-term sanctuary, not a primary rescue service. We house dogs that have been discarded, are too frail to survive on the streets, or carry chronic infections that would be a death sentence in a standard kennel. By focusing on lifelong hospice and medical rehabilitation for 1800+ residents, we ensure that every dog here receives consistent, life-saving care without the constant threat of new, untreated infections entering our facility.

Life Beyond the Street

When a dog comes to our sanctuary, the goal is not to find them a new home—because for most of our 1800+ residents, the 'forever home' is right here with us. These are the dogs that were born blind, suffered acid attacks, or have permanent brain injuries. They require a level of commitment that most families or shelters simply cannot provide.

Our Infrastructure

Our sanctuary is designed to cater to the aging, the sick, and the traumatized. We maintain 125,000 square feet of concrete flooring to ensure a clean, sanitary environment.

  • Medical Care: Our hospital is the largest referral unit of its kind in India, with over 100 inpatients receiving daily treatment for chronic conditions like distemper and tick fever.
  • Environment: We have specific park areas where dogs with severe behavioral issues are socialized, alongside a pool area for summer relief.
  • Daily Maintenance: Every single day, the facility is washed down to maintain hygiene standards that protect our immune-compromised residents.

Why We Don't 'Rescue' in the Traditional Sense

We hear the criticism often: 'Why don't you save this dog?' The answer lies in the safety of the 1800 dogs already in our care. Bringing in a new, unvetted dog from the street creates a risk of Parvo or Distemper, which could wipe out hundreds of our residents. By restricting admissions, we protect the lives currently under our roof. Our purpose is the 'forever' part of dog care—we are the last stop for dogs who have been failed by everyone else.

I'm Rakesh Shukla, and at VOSD, we don't just rescue dogs; we build a final home for those the world has written off. We are a sanctuary for the sick, the old, and the traumatized—dogs that would never make it on the street or in a standard shelter. If you want to understand what true, lifelong commitment to a dog looks like, this is it.
