A curated showcase of signature homes that blend traditional Kerala heritage with contemporary minimalist design, focused on sustainable living and natural materials.
Welcome to Gulmohar, a home I designed to be a living part of its natural surroundings. With curtain creepers draping the facade and stone-clad walls, this residence blurs the line between architecture and landscape, creating a tranquil, sustainable living experience.
This double-height living room in the Rayyan project showcases how I blend luxury with comfort. The dramatic black marble walls and floor-to-ceiling windows create a space that is both grand and intimately connected to the lush greenery outside.
At the heart of Kuttiyil House is this traditional open-to-sky courtyard, a modern interpretation of Kerala's classic 'nalukettu' architecture. It's a breathing space that fills the home with light, air, and a sense of timeless tranquility.
Craftsmanship is central to my work, as seen in this dining area at Kuttiyil House. The custom-designed wooden partition with its leaf motif and the large woven pendant light create a space that is both artistic and functional.
I design bedrooms to be personal sanctuaries. This space at Gulmohar opens directly onto a private courtyard, featuring a custom sun-ray art piece against a natural stone wall, merging the indoors with a serene, personal garden.
This Bangalore residence demonstrates my approach to modern urban architecture. The design uses clean lines, wooden louvers for privacy and texture, and integrated green balconies to create a dynamic facade that stands out in the city.
The kitchen at Kuttiyil House shows how a pop of color can transform a space. The glossy teal cabinetry contrasts with the patterned backsplash and exposed concrete ceiling, creating a modern kitchen that is both functional and full of personality.
About this collection
Every project I take on starts with a detailed analysis of the site's sun path and wind direction. My process isn't about imposing a rigid structure, but allowing the house to breathe through natural ventilation, exposed laterite stone walls, and strategic courtyards that anchor the living space to its immediate environment.
My work at VM Architects is defined by a deep respect for local materials and the fundamental need for a home to breathe. Whether I am working on a 1,800 sqft home like Gulmohar or a 5,000 sqft villa like Rayyan, the philosophy remains consistent: architecture must be a seamless interplay between the built environment and nature.
I avoid artificial finishes. You will see laterite stone, exposed brick, and natural granite throughout my portfolio. These are not just aesthetic choices, they are functional. Laterite, for instance, provides excellent thermal insulation, keeping interiors cool even in the humid climate of Calicut or the bustling streets of Bangalore.
My focus is on 'Indoor-Outdoor Living.' I integrate green courtyards, large glass apertures, and skylights to ensure that natural light and airflow are constant. You’ll notice in projects like Kuttiyil House, we interpret the traditional 'nalukettu' courtyard for modern family living, creating a central anchor that connects dining, living, and private bedroom zones.
Key principles of my work:
- Nature-Integrated Design: Every home is designed to maximize cross-ventilation, reducing the need for artificial cooling.
- Material Honesty: I use real wood, stone, and brick. No fake veneers or laminates.
- Heritage Reimagined: Sloped roofs and wooden rafters are essential to the vernacular architecture of Kerala, updated with modern joinery and waterproofing for longevity.
- Complete Process: I handle everything from the first architectural sketch to the final interior detail, ensuring the transition from structure to home is effortless.
When you walk into a home I have designed, it should feel quiet. It should feel like it has been there for years, even if it was completed yesterday. That is the harmony I strive for in every project.
VM Architects
I am Vinay Mohan, the principal architect at VM Architects. I build homes that bridge the gap between Kerala’s traditional textures and modern, minimalist living. Whether it is a structural renovation or a custom villa, I am there from the first sketch to the final interior detail.
