The Royal Bengal Tiger: Captured in the Wild

Every tiger sighting carries a story of survival and grace. From the forests of Tadoba to the wild terrain of Ranthambore, I have spent years watching and recording the lives of our national animal in their natural habitat.

This is the iconic tigress Maya of Tadoba, walking with her cubs. She is a very protective mother, and I believe she feels threatened when humans come too close to her family. Observing her over the years has taught me much about a mother's instinct to protect her young at all costs.

This photograph is very special to me, taken on International Tiger Day. It shows the same family from Tadoba, a symbol of India's success in doubling our tiger population. As a tiger lover, seeing so many in our parks now gives me great hope for their future.

This is a tribute to Collarwali, the Queen of Pench Tiger Reserve, who passed away in January 2022. She was a super mom, giving birth to 29 cubs in her lifetime. I photographed her here in 2007 when she was still young. She will always be remembered for her contribution to the tiger world.

During Durga Puja, we worship the nine forms of Maa Durga. When I look at this image of the tigress and her cubs, I see nine pairs of eyes looking back. For me, this family represents the nine forms of the Goddess, a powerful symbol of womanhood and strength, captured in the wild.

This was a unique sighting of the first courtship between the famous tigress Krishna (T-19) and the Star Tiger (T-28) at Ranthambor in May 2009. Our family had only two vehicles in the zone, and we were able to witness this private moment in the wild, a memory I will never forget.

This video shows some of the breathtaking animals you can see on a safari with us. From the majestic elephant and the royal tiger to the watchful gharial, the jungle is full of life. These are not just images, they are invitations to experience the wild for yourself.

On World Wildlife Day, I often share this image of the tigress family from Tadoba. Protecting the tiger at the top of the forest pyramid helps protect all the other animals in its realm. This picture is a reminder of the delicate balance of nature and our duty to preserve it.

This is the invitation card from my solo exhibition, "Tiger's Realm," held ten years ago at the India International Centre in Delhi. The exhibition was my attempt to show the tiger's world through my photographs, and I was happy it was appreciated by so many nature lovers.

About The Royal Bengal Tiger

When I photograph these big cats, I look for more than just a clear shot. I focus on behavior—how a mother tigress protects her cubs, or the tension during a courtship ritual. Whether you are looking for a museum-grade archival print for your home or need editorial-quality images for your project, each photograph here comes with the story of exactly where and when it was captured.

My time in the field, from the dry deciduous forests of Pench to the bamboo thickets of Tadoba, has been dedicated to documenting the Royal Bengal Tiger not just as a predator, but as a mother, a protector, and a symbol of our heritage.

The Story Behind the Lens

Every image in this collection holds a specific memory. I recall watching Collarwali, the legendary tigress of Pench, when she was still a subadult in 2007, long before she became the 'Super Mom' who raised 29 cubs. These encounters are not mere photo opportunities; they are chapters of natural history. I have spent days in the jeep with nothing but patience, waiting for the light to hit just right on a tigress and her litter, such as the moment I captured the 'nine eyes' of a tigress family during Navratri—a sight that reminded me deeply of the nine forms of Maa Durga.

I spent my working years behind a government desk, but my heart was always in the jungle. Now that I am retired, I dedicate my days to documenting the wild truths of India’s tigers. I would be happy to help you find the right image for your space or guide you on your own journey into the wild.
