Gir National Park: Lion Photography Expeditions
Witness the Asiatic Lion in its only home on Earth. Join me in Gir for a 4-day deep dive into ethical wildlife photography and fieldcraft.
Many think lions only live in Africa, but this is India. This video showcases the raw, untamed spirit of the Asiatic lions in Gir National Park, a place where royalty walks wild and free.
There's an unmatched intensity when a male Asiatic lion locks eyes with you. This is a portrait of the king, walking with pride through his domain in Gir.
A head-on view of a magnificent male lion walking with a powerful, rhythmic stride. Being in the presence of such royalty is a humbling and unforgettable experience.
A glimpse into the safari experience at Gir National Park. The journey through the forest is just as much a part of the adventure as the incredible wildlife sightings, like this young lion walking towards us.
About Gir National Park: The Lion Kingdom
I keep my groups to just 4 photographers per gypsy because you cannot get a crisp shot if you are fighting for window space. These 4 days are not just about finding lions, but learning to anticipate their movement so you are ready before the action happens. We spend time on daily image reviews, breaking down why some shots worked and others didn't, which is where the real learning happens.
Most people think lions only live in the African savannah, but here in Gujarat, we have the Asiatic Lion. This tour is about more than just checking a box on your wildlife bucket list. It is about understanding the animal behavior of the pride.
The Gir Experience
We focus on 4 to 5 private gypsy safaris over 4 days. This gives us the best chance to track the pride without rushing. Because I limit the group size, we have the flexibility to wait at a spot if we see signs of activity, rather than speeding to the next sighting like a tourist jeep.
What We Cover
- Fieldcraft: How to approach the jungle. We practice patience and silence.
- Technical Settings: We look at using AI Servo focus and back-button techniques to track big cats, especially when they are on the move.
- Ethics: Wildlife photography is meaningless if we disturb the habitat. We focus on ethical observation, keeping distance, and respecting the rangers' instructions.
- Post-Processing: After the morning and evening drives, we sit together to review what we captured. You get honest feedback on your framing and exposure settings, helping you improve frame by frame.
Who This Is For
You do not need a massive lens to start, but you do need an open mind. Whether you are using a crop-sensor or a full-frame camera, I help you optimize your gear for the light we have. We stay at a 3-star resort, with all meals included, so you can focus entirely on the photography. If you are ready to stop just taking photos and start making them, let’s go.
Tushar Tandel
I’m not here to just show you where the lions are. I’m here to help you get the shot that actually tells a story, while respecting the space of these incredible creatures.
