Macro Photography: Capturing India’s Hidden Miniature Worlds
See the world differently. From the vibrant display of a fan-throated lizard to the intricate details of a gecko, discover the magic of macro photography in my guided field expeditions.
Embarking on a nocturnal trail, I found this Deccan Banded Gecko. As rain fell, a droplet landed on its eye, and I captured the incredible moment it used its tongue to clean it, a tiny act of self-care in the wild.
A video showcasing the fan-throated lizard's vibrant dewlap display. This tiny reptile turns the dry grasslands into a stage, and capturing its performance is a real treat.
A full display of the fan-throated lizard's colorful fan. The combination of blue, yellow, and orange is simply breathtaking.
An extreme close-up of a gecko, capturing the moment it licks its eye. Macro photography reveals behaviors and details that are impossible to see otherwise.
Another angle of the Deccan Banded Gecko cleaning its eye, showing the texture of its skin and the water droplets from the rain.
A full-body shot of the Deccan Banded Gecko during its grooming moment, its dark skin and yellow bands standing out against the wet background.
A female fan-throated lizard, more subtle in her coloring but just as beautiful, surveys her surroundings from a rock.
A wider shot of the male fan-throated lizard, showing its colorful display in the context of its rocky, arid habitat.
An extreme close-up of a gecko's eye. The intricate, vertical pupil and detailed scales are a universe in themselves.

About Macro & Miniature Worlds
When you join my macro expeditions, we move beyond just clicking buttons. You will learn the actual fieldcraft required to get close to tiny subjects without scaring them off. It is about patience, understanding behavior, and knowing how to use light, like diffusers and flashes, to turn a simple insect or reptile into a dramatic, high-detail portrait.
Seeing the Unseen
Macro photography changes your perspective. It forces you to slow down, get low, and observe creatures most people walk right past. Whether we are tracking Deccan Banded Geckos in the Western Ghats or waiting for the vibrant fan-throated lizard to pose, the goal is to capture high-definition, behavior-rich frames.
Field Techniques You’ll Master
- Ethical Approaching: I teach you how to get close to herps and insects without disturbing their habitat.
- Light Management: We use external flashes and diffusers to control harsh light, ensuring textures pop against soft, creamy backgrounds.
- Gear Optimization: You do not need a massive investment. I will show you how to get 1:1 magnification with crop-sensor cameras and mid-range lenses.
- Manual Control: We focus on getting the focus spot-on, because with macro, a millimeter difference ruins the shot.
Why Join My Expeditions?
I do not just host photography workshops; I facilitate encounters with nature. My trips to biodiversity hotspots like Tamhini or Amboli are designed to immerse you in the ecosystem. We spend hours on night trails, understanding reptile behavior and waiting for the right moment. If you are ready to stop shooting from a distance and start telling the stories of these tiny giants, let's head out.
Tushar Tandel
I am just a guy with a regular job who loves disappearing into the woods with a camera. When I find a snake or a gecko, everything else just fades out. I am here to show you that you do not need expensive gear to capture these tiny wonders, just the right patience.
