Soil & Fertilizer Secrets for Healthy Terrace Plants
Most store-bought soil mixes are full of salt or low on nutrients. I'll show you how to properly wash cocopeat and mix the right fertilizer for a thriving garden.
This is a quick look at how to expand a compressed cocopeat block. Just add water and it breaks apart easily. Remember, this is just the first step before you must wash it.
Be careful, using cocopeat without washing it can dry out and kill your plants. It comes from coastal areas and has a high salt content and pH, which is harmful. I always wash it two or three times before using it in my soil mix.
If your plants have yellow leaves or slow growth, a granular biofertilizer can help. I use this Biofics Nutrimix once a month. It contains humic acid and micronutrients that slowly release into the soil and improve plant health.
About Soil & Fertilizer Secrets
Stop using store-bought cocopeat blocks directly! It is usually high in coastal salts and has a high pH, which can burn your plant roots within weeks. I always soak and wash my cocopeat blocks at least two times to remove these salts before mixing it into my potting soil. This one simple step has completely changed how my bhindi and hibiscus plants grow.
Getting the potting mix right is 80% of the battle. If you don't get the drainage and nutrient balance sorted, you are just setting your plants up for failure.
My Soil Recipe Approach I don't believe in fancy, expensive mixes. I use a simple, robust formula: Expanded Cocopeat (washed thoroughly), Perlite for aeration, Vermiculite for moisture retention, Neem Cake Powder to prevent root pests, and Vermicompost for organic nutrition.
Feeding Your Plants Plants need regular food just like us. I split my feeding into two categories:
- Slow Release: Granular bio-fertilizers. I mix these into the soil once a month. This feeds the plant roots steadily over time.
- Quick Boost: Liquid bio-fertilizers. These are my go-to when I see yellowing leaves or slow growth. A quick spray provides the immediate nutrient hit the plant needs to recover.
Whether you are growing gourds or ornamental flowers, the secret is consistency. We can chat about your specific balcony sunlight and space to build a plan that actually works, bina confusion ke.
