Easy Planting and Propagation Techniques for Your Terrace
Want to grow more plants without spending on new ones? I'll show you the easy hacks I use on my terrace for everything from seed germination to air layering.
See how easy it is to grow brinjal from seeds. I started with a packet of hybrid seeds in a grow bag, and soon I had small seedlings which I later thinned out to get healthy plants and eventually, vegetables.
This video shows the process of growing spinach from seeds in a grow bag. I just sprinkled the seeds, covered them with a thin layer of soil, watered them, and in a few days, I had fresh spinach sprouts.
This is a unique method of air layering a lemon branch using aloe vera as a natural rooting hormone. After preparing the branch, I wrap it in aloe vera and cocopeat to encourage new roots to grow.
Repotting my Madhukamini plant into a larger grow bag. Giving plants more space for their roots is essential for them to grow bigger and produce more flowers.
This shows the progress of a Broken Heart plant (Monstera adansonii) sapling. I repotted it into fresh soil, and you can see how much it grew in just 10 days.
This is the result of planting Rain Lily bulbs. They grow very fast, and you can see the beautiful pink flowers blooming. A butterfly even came to visit.
About Planting & Propagation Techniques
Most people think you need expensive chemicals to multiply fruit trees, but I use simple aloe vera from my own pots. By peeling back the bark on a healthy branch and wrapping it in fresh aloe gel and damp cocopeat, you can get strong roots in about 50 days without spending a rupee on store-bought hormones.
Gardening is all about trial and error, and honestly, the best stuff is what you can propagate yourself. Whether you are growing brinjals, spinach, or fruit trees in your terrace garden, you don't need a nursery to expand your collection.
My Go-To Propagation Hacks
- Air Layering with Aloe: This is my favorite technique for fruit trees. It’s a clean way to get a new tree that is genetically identical to the parent. Just make sure the branch is healthy, the cut is clean, and the cocopeat stays moist.
- Seed Germination: For veggies like spinach or brinjals, don't bury the seeds too deep. I just sprinkle them, cover with a thin layer of soil, and keep the moisture consistent with a spray bottle. Watching those first sprouts is the best part of the process.
- Repotting Done Right: If your plant looks crowded, it is time for a move. Always choose a pot that is just one size bigger. Using the right potting mix—with perlite and organic manure—makes all the difference for roots to breathe.
Common Questions
- Is organic propagation really effective? Yes, absolutely. Using organic materials like aloe vera prevents chemical shock to the plant and is much safer for home setups in Delhi NCR.
- What tools do I need? You don't need a massive kit. A pair of sharp, high-quality pruning shears is essential to make clean cuts, which prevents infection in the branch.
- How often should I check the propagation? Once you set up your air layering, check the moisture every week. Patience is the only real secret ingredient here.
