My Force-Free Dog Training Philosophy
Forget shouting commands and expecting instant obedience. True training is about building a language of trust where your dog actually wants to listen.
My entire training philosophy is about setting your dog up for success. This means putting in the effort to understand them, praising them when they listen, and rewarding them generously for making good choices. This positive, reward based approach builds a strong bond and a dog that loves to learn with you.
When it comes to communicating with your dog, less is more. Instead of shouting a series of commands, it is more effective to be a calm role model. Dogs mirror our energy, so by staying calm and clear, you can teach your dog desired behaviors much more effectively.
A simple shift in perspective can change everything. Instead of asking "Why does my dog do this?", I encourage my clients to ask "What would I rather my dog do?". This helps us focus on teaching desirable behaviors and providing good choices for your dog, which is the foundation of my counseling and training approach.
About My Training Philosophy
True training is not about shouting a list of commands like sit, stay, and don't jump all at once. Dogs mirror our energy, so if you are frazzled, they will be too. My approach focuses on being a calm role model, using positive reinforcement to reward the behaviors you actually want, rather than just correcting the ones you do not.
I often meet pet parents who feel like they are in a constant battle with their dog. They ask, 'Why does my dog do this?' and try to fix the problem by adding more commands to the mix. It rarely works. When you are managing a hyper-vigilant puppy or an Indie dog who is reactive on walks, your dog is not being bad. They are just confused by mixed signals.
My training philosophy, born from years of learning alongside my own Indie dog, Mishti, flips the script. Instead of focusing on the problem, I ask, 'What would I rather my dog do?'
This simple shift changes everything. If your dog jumps on guests, we do not just yell no. We teach them to sit when the doorbell rings or guide them to a spot where they can relax. We use reward-based methods to mark these correct choices, which builds a language of trust. Whether we are tackling leash pulling or settling in a new home, the goal is always the same: setting your dog up for success by providing clear, consistent, and kind guidance. It is not about magic. It is about patience, effort, and showing your dog that choosing you is always the best option.
