Songs with a Message

My songwriting process for this piece started with the frustration of seeing litter around the very trees that give us shade. I collaborated with lyricist Ashwini Koushik to turn that discomfort into a song that isn't just a performance, but a conversation starter about the civic responsibility we all share in Bengaluru.

Writing a song with a social message requires a balance. You want the lyrics to be impactful, not just poetic, and the melody needs to carry the weight of the subject without overwhelming the message.

For this project, the goal was to humanize a tree. By personifying it, the lyrics ask a direct question: 'Why have you ruined me?' It forces the listener to pause and consider the impact of daily habits on our environment.

When I work on songs meant to advocate or raise awareness, I focus on:

• The Narrative: We identify the core emotion. Is it anger, grief, or a call to action?
• The Rhythmic Flow: The lyrics must be conversational enough to land hard, fitting into a natural melodic structure that people can hum, but also listen to.
• Language: Using Kannada allowed us to reach the locals directly, making the plea feel closer to home.
