The Driftwood Wellness Retreat Design
A 3.5-acre wellness retreat in Kolkata designed to blur the lines between indoor luxury and the wild, untamed beauty of nature.
The guest units at Driftwood are designed to feel like private sanctuaries nestled in nature. This view shows the organic forms of the building, with its curved walls and thatched roofing, rising from the landscape. The stone steps and earthen patio blur the boundary between inside and out.
Here, you can see how the different structures are staggered across the property to ensure privacy and unique views. I used a combination of wood, mud-plastered walls, and thatched elements to create a sustainable architectural style that respects the land.
This wide shot showcases the resort's main building, with its elevated wooden deck and organic, flowing lines. The architecture is intentionally low-impact, designed to sit humbly within the surrounding trees and grassy fields, creating a harmonious hospitality experience.
The main lodge and pool area are seen here, surrounded by the lush greenery of the property. The design emphasizes open-air living, with wide balconies and decks that invite guests to enjoy the natural setting from every vantage point.
From this angle, the relationship between the main building and the surrounding forest is clear. The structure's curved roofline and wooden supports echo the forms of the trees, making it feel as if it grew from the earth itself.
This elevated view highlights the multi-level design of the guest villas. The thatched roofs and rustic wooden railings are key elements of the resort's earthy aesthetic, providing both shade and a strong visual connection to traditional building techniques.
The outdoor seating area, complete with a fire pit, is designed for connection and relaxation. The use of raw timber for the building's support structure and railings is a signature detail of this nature-inspired resort architecture.
I designed the buildings to incorporate existing trees wherever possible. Here, a balcony is built around a tree, creating a unique treehouse feel and reinforcing the deep connection between the living space and the natural world.
A close-up view of the craftsmanship involved in the resort's construction. The thick wooden posts are bound with rope, a detail that adds to the raw, handcrafted feel of the architecture and showcases our commitment to using authentic materials.
This image shows the intricate wooden latticework on the windows and the rustic texture of the thatched roof overhang. These details are inspired by local craftsmanship and add a layer of artistry to the sustainable resort design.
About The Driftwood Wellness Retreat
Creating a successful wellness resort comes down to how you place the structures. At Driftwood, we staggered every guest unit so that each visitor gets total privacy, ensuring the architecture feels like part of the forest rather than an intrusion. This layout, combined with our use of raw timber and mud plaster, helps guests disconnect from the noise of the city and feel that sense of calm immediately upon arrival.
Designing for hospitality requires more than just aesthetics. We focus on the 'Sukoon' or peace that guests crave, which starts with how we handle the hard finishes. For this project, we integrated local art and natural textures like thatch, woven cane, and stone to ensure the building ages beautifully with the landscape rather than against it.
The Architecture of Calm
Our approach to this 3.5-acre site was rooted in sustainable architecture. By using local materials, we kept the construction impact low while maximizing the guest experience. The use of curved walls, earthen plaster, and thatched roofing isn't just a design choice, it is a temperature management strategy that keeps the units cool naturally. We also incorporated existing tree growth into the balcony designs to create a genuine treehouse experience.
Operational Design
Beyond the look, we prioritized functionality. We managed acoustics using natural baffles and ensured HVAC systems remained hidden within the design, allowing the visuals to speak for themselves. The pool area and fire pits were positioned to catch the best light, serving as social hubs that still feel grounded in the earth. If you are planning a resort, boutique hotel, or wellness center, we work with you to build a narrative that guests can feel from the moment they step into your lobby.
