Stop worrying about stains and upkeep. Natural stone is incredibly durable, and with the right protective sealants, keeping your marble and sandstone pristine is actually quite simple.

Here’s a magic trick for you. On the left is a raw sandstone that absorbs water instantly. On the right is a coated piece. See how the water beads up and rolls off? This is how I make my stone creations weatherproof and stain-proof.

A common question I get is about coating sandstone. I highly recommend it. A good quality sealant, which can last 4-5 years indoors, prevents the stone from absorbing water, tea, or coffee, making it incredibly easy to clean.

This is a close-up of my sandstone lanterns during a rainstorm. The stone is naturally durable and weather-resistant, and with a proper sealant, it can withstand the elements for years with minimal maintenance.

When clients ask for the best stone for a kitchen counter, I often recommend black granite. It is one of the strongest natural stones, waterproof, non-flammable, and extremely long-lasting, making it a practical and beautiful choice.

About Stone Care & Expertise

The biggest secret to worry-free stone is using a high-quality hydrophobic sealant. I apply this to all my outdoor sandstone and indoor marble pieces, creating a protective barrier so that liquids like tea, coffee, or rainwater simply bead up and roll off the surface. It is not a permanent solution, but it is incredibly easy to manage—a quick re-coat every 2 to 4 years keeps your stone looking brand new without any scrubbing.

Many people assume that because sandstone is porous, it is too high-maintenance for Indian homes or outdoor settings. In reality, modern stone technology has changed that completely. When you choose natural stone, you are picking a material that lasts for generations, provided you treat it correctly.

Why Coating Matters

Think of stone like skin—it needs protection to stay healthy. Sandstone is naturally porous, which means it absorbs water, leading to moss in damp conditions or stubborn stains from spills. My process involves using industrial-grade sealants that penetrate the stone pores without changing its natural texture or color. You get the authentic, rustic feel of raw stone, but with the practical convenience of a surface that won't absorb spills.

Maintenance Realities

  • Indoor Use: For marble consoles or fireplace mantels, a good quality sealant can last up to 5 years indoors. Cleaning is as simple as wiping it down with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Outdoor Use: Exterior pieces like lanterns or garden furniture face harsher conditions. Depending on your local weather, I recommend a fresh coat of sealant every 2 years to ensure it remains weather-proof and resistant to harsh sunlight or heavy rains.

Selecting the Right Stone

If you want the lowest maintenance possible, I often suggest black granite for kitchen or high-traffic areas. It is dense, non-flammable, and practically waterproof. However, if your heart is set on the aesthetics of sandstone or marble, don't let the 'maintenance' myth stop you. With the right treatment, you get the best of both worlds—timeless beauty that works for your lifestyle.
