My Approach to Acne and Scarring
Acne scars form when inflamed lesions damage the tissue beneath the skin. The severity depends on the depth of the initial inflammation and how quickly it was treated. Because every scar pattern is different—ranging from icepick and rolling to boxcar scars—there is no single 'magic' treatment.
Treatment Modalities
I tailor the procedure based on the specific scar type and skin health:
- Chemical Peels: Used primarily for pigmentary marks left behind by acne. We use various acids, including glycolic, salicylic, and lactic, to exfoliate the surface and even out tone.
- Subcision: This is essential for deep, tethered scars. I use a specialized technique to cut through the fibrous bands pulling the skin down, which helps elevate the scar and promotes collagen remodeling.
- Fractional CO2 Laser & MNRF: I use these to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, which triggers a natural healing response and collagen production. This is highly effective for smoothing surface irregularities.
- Dermal Fillers: For specific depressed scars, hyaluronic acid fillers can provide an immediate lift, raising the scar to the level of the surrounding skin.
- Surgical Revision: In cases of severe or keloid scarring, I may perform procedures like punch excision or grafting to remove or improve the appearance of the tissue.
