An intimate look at a group class at my home. Here, I am guiding my students as they practice together, carrying forward the rich legacy of Hindustani music with passion and discipline.

A practice session for 'Gamak taan' with my students. I focus on breaking down complex techniques into manageable steps to ensure every student can grasp them.

About A Glimpse into Our Classes

The classes are structured around the traditional baithak style, with students seated on floor rugs to maintain the authentic posture required for proper sitar resonance. Whether you join for the weekly group sessions in Bandra or the personalized one-on-one coaching in Kandivali, you will be learning specific techniques like krintan and gamak directly under my guidance, rather than just following a standard syllabus.

My approach is to treat teaching not as a transaction, but as a 'swar yatra' or musical journey. We stick to the traditional Guru-Shishya method, ensuring you get the same depth of knowledge that my masters passed down to me.

What You Can Expect

We cover the core foundations of Hindustani classical music, including sur (melody), taal (rhythm), and laya (tempo). For those preparing for exams, our curriculum is aligned with the Gandharva syllabus. If you are an advanced student, we move into more complex areas like raag expansion and detailed ornamentation work.

Where We Learn

We host regular classes at two main locations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Area:

  • Bandra West: Sessions at Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir.
  • Kandivali East: Training at Swar Sanskruti Music Academy.

Practical Details

  • Group Classes: These batches typically have 5 to 15 students, creating an interactive environment where you learn by listening to your peers. We provide electronic Tanpuras, but you will need to bring your own sitar.
  • Performance Opportunities: Music must be shared. My students are eligible to perform at our annual Guruvandan festival, and top performers are often invited to join the Ravi Chary Sitar Symphony ensemble for public concerts.

Whether you are a beginner looking to understand the basics or an experienced player wanting to refine your Jafferkhani Baaj technique, my goal is to help you find your own voice in this music.

For me, the sitar is an extension of the soul, and teaching is simply the way I pass that gift to the next generation. I see my students not just as learners, but as fellow travellers on this musical path, and I take pride in ensuring they get the same foundational knowledge that my gurus shared with me.
