Batting Masterclass: Technique & Drills
From V-grips to cover drives, we break down your batting technique using video analysis and drills. Build a reliable game from the ground up.
A stable stance is the bedrock of good batting. I teach my players to keep their feet shoulder-width apart for balance and to focus on keeping their eyes level, which automatically stabilizes the head.
"How to hold a bat?" is the first question I answer. I teach the V-grip, ensuring the top hand and bottom hand are correctly positioned on the splice of the bat for maximum control and power.
Understanding the backlift is crucial. I explain how the backlift changes depending on the shot, from a lower lift for a defensive block to a higher one for a powerful drive, always keeping the bat close to the body.
Correcting a common mistake with initial movement. I teach my players to move forward into the shot, transferring their body weight efficiently to play powerful drives with a stable head position.
A still head is a non-negotiable for any batsman. I drill my players to keep their head and eyes level at the point of delivery, which is critical for judging the ball's line and length correctly.
We work on trigger movements to ensure a batsman is balanced and ready to move forward or back. A neutral, balanced position is key to reacting to any delivery the bowler throws at you.
A side-by-side comparison of an incorrect and a correct batting stance. A proper stance provides balance and prepares the body for a powerful and controlled shot.
Here I am correcting a common flaw in front foot landing. The weight must transfer from the heel to the toe, not the other way around, to ensure you are moving into the shot and not backing away.
Perfecting the cover drive. The top video shows the front knee bent, allowing weight to transfer into the shot for power and control. The bottom video shows a straight leg, which reduces power and increases risk.
Teaching the cover drive. I tell my students, "Beta, don't meet the ball too far in front of your body." Playing it close keeps the ball on the ground and in your control.
About Batting Masterclass
Don't just swing the bat—understand the biomechanics behind it. Whether it’s your front foot landing or head position, I use side-by-side video analysis to pinpoint exactly where you're losing power, helping you stop 'popping' the ball and start hitting through the line.
In cricket, your technique is your lifeline. If your basics—your grip, stance, and backlift—are shaky, no amount of raw power will save you in a high-pressure match. At my academy in Kopar Khairane, we move beyond simple net practice.
The 'Basics First' Philosophy
We don't teach shortcuts. A proper V-grip is the foundation of control, and a balanced stance is the start of every solid shot. Whether you are struggling to keep your head still or your backlift is getting 'stuck', we use high-speed video analysis to compare your movement against textbook standards. This isn't just about watching a video; it's about seeing where your weight transfer is failing and fixing it before you step onto the field.
Shot-Specific Modules
We don't just 'bat'. We have dedicated modules for:
- Cover Drives: Fixing the front knee bend and ensuring the weight stays into the shot.
- Pull Shots: Mastering horizontal bat rotation and timing, not just brute force.
- Sweep Shots: Essential for handling spin on turning tracks, focusing on getting low and disrupting the bowler's line.
From Nets to MCA Selection
We train serious players. If you are consistent with your technique, you are eligible for MCA club selection guidance and corporate trial pathways. My goal is to move you from the synthetic nets to competitive cricket, where your technique is tested against real pace and spin. Remember, cricket is played in the mind—we focus on mental strength, discipline, and 'backing yourself' when the pressure is on.
