About Finding Your Groove: Pop, Funk & Soul
A lot of people think pop singing is just about power. It is actually about agility and knowing when to pull back. In our sessions, we focus on syncopation and breath control, so you are not just singing the melody, but playing with the groove. Whether you want to nail a tricky riff or find a soulful tone for a ballad, we start by understanding how your specific voice navigates these rhythms, without the pressure of having to sound perfect from day one.
Mastering the Groove
Pop, funk, and soul require a different kind of precision. Unlike classical training that focuses on sustained power, these genres demand rhythmic accuracy. You have to learn to hit the 'pocket' of the beat, which creates that signature swing or drive.
What We Work On
- Syncopation: Learning to sing slightly ahead or behind the beat. It is the secret to making a song feel alive.
- Vocal Runs & Riffs: We break down complex melismas into manageable technical pieces. We look at the chord structures to understand where the notes fit, so you don't strain your voice trying to guess them.
- Breath Control: Keeping your tone consistent, especially when moving through different registers in upbeat pop tracks.
- Tone & Texture: Finding your 'real' voice rather than imitating the artist on the recording.
The Process
We will pick a track you love—maybe something classic like The Temptations for harmony or modern pop for phrasing—and strip it back to the basics. By removing the heavy studio production, we learn how to carry the song with just our voice.
It is normal to feel awkward when learning a new riff. We treat every 'mistake' as data. If a run does not land, we slow it down, check the airflow, and try again. It is about building muscle memory and confidence, not performing for an audience immediately. We practice, we mess up, and we get better.
