Small dogs and senior pets have unique physical needs that often get overlooked. From arthritis management to consent-based handling, I help you make their daily life safer and more comfortable.

This video highlights common mistakes to avoid when caring for a senior dog with arthritis, such as too much rest, which can lead to muscle loss.

This video shows three ways I keep my 9-year-old senior dog, Candy, fit and active during the winter, including fitness exercises and joint supplements.

A dog ramp is a game-changer for small dogs. This video explains how repetitive jumping strains joints and spine, and how a ramp can prevent injury and support them as they age.

Is your dog restless even after a long walk? Slippery floors can cause muscle fatigue and stress. This video explains the risks and provides solutions like anti-slip mats and trimmed nails.

This series of posts details the ways I support my senior dog with hip dysplasia.

Tip 1: Cover slippery surfaces with rugs or foam mats to provide better grip and prevent injuries.

Tip 2: Provide a fresh food diet with joint supplements and have pain medication handy for flare-ups.

About this collection

When a senior dog becomes hesitant to move or acts 'lazy,' it is rarely about attitude. Often, they are navigating chronic pain or slippery flooring that makes simple tasks like eating or standing up feel dangerous. I help you identify these hidden physical stressors before they turn into behavioral problems, focusing on practical adjustments like non-slip surfaces and elevated feeding stations that provide immediate relief.

Understanding Their Reality

My approach to care for small and senior dogs is rooted in one question: What is this dog feeling? If your senior dog avoids jumping on the couch, it might be hip pain. If your small dog snaps when you pick them up, it might be a fear of being restrained without warning. I help you move beyond quick fixes and address the root causes of their discomfort.

The Senior Dog Audit

Senior dogs are not just 'slowing down.' They are often dealing with arthritis, muscle atrophy, and joint inflammation. We look at your home setup to find 'trap' areas. Are your floors slippery? This forces your dog to constantly tense their muscles, leading to fatigue and further injury. We work on simple, low-cost modifications:

  • Traction: Using foam mats or rugs in high-traffic areas.
  • Mobility: Using ramps instead of expecting them to leap up onto furniture.
  • Feeding: Raising bowls to a height that allows a neutral spine, shifting weight off painful front limbs.

Consent for Small Dogs

Small dogs often live in a world made for giants. They are frequently picked up, passed around, and loomed over without their consent. This causes immense stress and can lead to defensive behaviors like nipping or barking. I teach you to advocate for your dog, ensuring they have the space to choose interactions. We focus on teaching them cues to jump up onto furniture themselves, rather than being lifted, which rebuilds their confidence and trust in you.

Why My Approach Works

I do not believe in 'fixing' these behaviors with corrections. If your dog is in pain or afraid, a correction only teaches them to hide their discomfort. My training methods are entirely force-free, focusing on pain management, gentle handling, and creating an environment where your dog feels safe enough to relax.

I'm Kirti. My approach started with my own dogs, Candy and Russel, when I realized they weren't being difficult—they were just in pain or overstimulated. I help you see the world from your dog's perspective, turning 'bad' behavior into a call for help.
