Decoding Your Dog: Understanding Pain, Fear & Behavior
Understand the 'why' behind your dog's behavior. We look beyond the surface to address pain, fear, and stress, helping you stop fighting against their instincts and start connecting.
When I stopped labeling my dogs' actions as "good" or "bad" and got curious about the "why," our relationship transformed. This video shows how shifting from judgment to curiosity helps you understand your dog's unmet needs.
Before you start any training plan, it's crucial to rule out medical issues and assess your dog's environment. A staggering 82% of behavior issues are linked to pain, which is why my approach is always holistic.
It can be difficult for a vet to assess chronic pain in a stressful clinic environment. I help you document your dog's behavior at home so we can work collaboratively with your vet to get an accurate diagnosis.
This video highlights some common but often missed signs of pain in dogs, such as changes in gait, difficulty lying down, and even behaviors that look like hyperactivity.
When managing arthritis in senior dogs, restricting movement too much can worsen muscle loss. I show you how to balance rest with safe, gentle exercises to maintain mobility.
Pain can manifest in many ways, including reluctance to be touched, changes in sleep, or sudden aggression. Learning to spot these signs is one of the best things you can do for your dog.
Did you know that fur sticking out in odd places can be a sign of tight fascia, indicating underlying discomfort? This is one of the many subtle pain signals I teach pet parents to recognize.
This infographic explains the psychology of fear in dogs, a crucial survival instinct. Understanding this helps us respond with empathy instead of frustration.
When a dog senses danger, their brain releases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This post breaks down the physiological response that prepares them for fight, flight, freeze, or fidget.
This chart details the "4 F's of Fear": Fight, Flight, Fidget, and Freeze. Recognizing these responses is key to understanding what your dog is communicating in stressful situations.
About Decoding Your Dog: Understanding Pain, Fear & Behavior
Often, when we see 'naughty' behavior like sudden aggression, excessive barking, or jumping, we immediately look for a way to stop it. In my experience, especially with the many cases I see linked to underlying pain, we need to pause. Before we train, we investigate. Is there a gait change? A shift in sleeping patterns? Sometimes, the most helpful thing you can do for your dog isn't a command, but a vet visit to rule out physical discomfort.
When I work with pet parents in Delhi and Gurgaon, the first thing we do is throw out the labels of 'good' and 'bad' behavior. If your dog is pulling on the leash or barking, they are not being stubborn. They are likely trying to communicate a need that is not being met or dealing with a stressor in their environment.
Fear, stress, and pain manifest in subtle ways. A dog who seems 'hyperactive' might actually be in pain, and reactivity can often be a response to environmental stress or unmet needs.
My approach focuses on:
- Holistic Assessment: Looking at your dog's lifestyle, diet, and physical health to rule out pain-induced behaviors.
- Environmental Management: Identifying and managing triggers in your home or on walks to lower cortisol levels and prevent 'trigger stacking.'
- Communication: Learning to read body language, from displacement behaviors like 'shake-offs' to the 4 F’s of fear (Fight, Flight, Fidget, Freeze).
Training isn't about control; it's about building a partnership. By understanding the 'why' behind your dog's actions, you can stop fighting against their instincts and start working with them. Whether it is senior dog mobility, separation anxiety, or just needing better communication, we build a plan that respects your dog’s agency and restores your peace of mind.
