Macro Photography of Rare Reptiles and Amphibians
Discover the hidden giants of the rainforest. Join my specialized macro photography tours across the Western Ghats and Thailand to document the world's most elusive reptiles and amphibians.
My dream of finding the Cochin forest cane turtle came true. This is one of the world's rarest turtles, and photographing this individual after years of searching was an unreal find.
The incredible Purple Frog, a "living fossil" that spends most of its life underground. This shot, with rain streaks created by a slow shutter speed, captures the magic of its brief emergence.
The bizarre and unique Tentacled Snake from Thailand. It's the only snake with mechanosensory tentacles on its snout, which it uses to hunt fish in murky water.
The Anaimalai Gliding Frog, also known as the "Green Tiger" for its striking juvenile stripes. These markings fade as it ages, making this shot of a young one special.
A Large eyed pit viper from Thailand. Its name is no exaggeration; its large eyes are a key feature for identifying this beautiful green snake.
A large scale pit viper "tasting the air" with its forked tongue. This is how snakes collect chemical information from their environment, sending it to their Jacobson's Organ.
The Resplendent Shrub Frog, a critically endangered species found only on high altitude peaks in Eravikulam National Park. A true piece of candy from the rainforest.
A wide angle habitat shot of the Resplendent Shrub Frog. This shows the tiny frog in its vast, misty, high altitude grassland world, giving a sense of its unique environment.
A top down view of the Tentacled Snake's head, showing the unique texture of its scales and the placement of its twin tentacles.
A side profile of the Tentacled Snake, offering another perspective on its strange and wonderful facial features.
About The Secret World of Reptiles & Amphibians
Macro photography in the rainforest is less about high-speed chases and more about mastering light in deep, dark undergrowth. We don't just point and shoot; we spend time learning how to use diffusers and off-camera flash to reveal the intricate textures of a pit viper or the translucency of a tree frog. You’ll be surprised at how much 'hidden' life is right under your boots once you know where to look and how to adapt your settings to the forest floor.
Beyond the Surface
When I lead these macro photography tours, the goal is to shift your perspective. We are hunting for the 'little five' of the forest—species like the critically endangered Resplendent Shrub Frog or the bizarre Tentacled Snake. These creatures often go unnoticed, yet they hold some of the most fascinating evolutionary stories on the planet, from the mechanosensory tentacles on a snake's snout to the 'living fossil' status of the Purple Frog.
The Field Experience
Whether we are trekking through the misty high-altitude grasslands of the Western Ghats or navigating the murky waters of Thailand, the approach remains the same: ethical, patient, and precise. We focus on:
- Flash & Diffusion: Understanding how to control light in low-contrast environments to avoid harsh highlights and maintain natural textures.
- Focus Stacking: Capturing depth-of-field that a single frame simply cannot resolve.
- Subject Behavior: Respecting the animal's space while getting close enough for high-quality, frame-filling portraits.
This isn't a safari where you sit in a jeep; this is 'herping' on foot. You will get muddy, you will have to wait for the light, and you will need to be incredibly observant. But when you finally lock focus on a rare Malabar Torrent Toad and see those brilliant colors pop, it is an experience that stays with you forever. My workshops are small, ensuring that I can provide one-on-one guidance to help you get the shot, regardless of your current experience level.
