From the 'Kala Teetar' in the scrub to the Rain Quail hiding in tall grass, these birds require patience and a keen eye to spot.

The Black Francolin, or 'Kala Teetar', the state bird of Haryana, calling from its perch on a concrete post.

A male Rain Quail, or Black-breasted Quail, hiding in the tall green grass. Its bold black and white face pattern is unmistakable.

About Ground Dwellers & Grassland Birds

Shooting ground-dwelling species like the Black Francolin or the Rain Quail is not about speed, it is about total stillness. These birds are master camouflagers that vanish into the grass the moment they sense movement. When I guide you in hotspots like Jhanjhrola Kheda, we do not hike. We find a quiet vantage point, sit low, and wait for them to emerge. If you rush, you will only see the back of a bird as it flushes away.

Unlike raptors that soar or songbirds that perch high, ground dwellers live in the scrub, farmland, and dense grasslands. This makes photography here a rigorous exercise in observation. You need to understand their behavior—when they call, where they forage, and how they react to the wind. In Gurugram’s remaining grasslands, like those near Bhondsi or Sultanpur, you are not just taking pictures; you are documenting the delicate balance of our local ecosystem.

Technical Approach

Because these birds are often small and partially hidden, focus accuracy is everything. I usually recommend a slightly higher f-stop to ensure both the eye and the bill are sharp, even when the bird is peeking through foliage. Depth of field management is the difference between a clear portrait and a blurry mess.

Why Join a Photo Walk?

I host guided sessions in Delhi NCR specifically to help you move beyond automatic modes. I teach you how to:

  • Spot the subject: Learn to scan the grass and listen for specific calls like that of the Francolin.
  • Manage Light: Use the golden hour to bring out the iridescent details in a peacock's neck or the patterns on a quail.
  • Ethics: Learn to get the shot without stressing the bird or disturbing its nesting area.

Whether you are a beginner with a basic DSLR or an enthusiast with a telephoto kit, these walks are designed to help you see what you are currently missing in your own backyard.
