Severe Mat and Coat Restoration Services
Matted fur is often painful for pets, not just an aesthetic issue. I assess each case individually to determine whether we can gently detangle or if a safe shave-down is the kindest option for your dog's comfort.
De-shedding a double-coated breed like a Husky is an intensive process, but essential for preventing mats and promoting healthy air circulation to the skin. This video shows the sheer volume of undercoat I removed, resulting in a lighter, healthier, and beautifully restored coat.
This Cocker Spaniel arrived with a tangled and messy coat, a common issue for this breed. The video shows the transformation from curly, matted fur to a smooth, sleek, and comfortable trim. This is a great example of how I can restore a coat without a full shave.
This video shows the challenging first steps of dealing with a severely matted Shih Tzu. You can see the discomfort in the dog's eyes and the delicate work required to begin removing the tangled fur before a soothing bath can even happen. This is the reality of coat rescue.
About Severe Mat & Coat Restoration
I don't believe in one-size-fits-all grooming. When you bring your pet in, I first inspect the severity of the mats. If the tangles are tight and causing your dog pain or restricting their movement, I will always recommend a safe shave-down rather than forcing a painful, long detangling session. My priority is ensuring your dog leaves the salon feeling lighter, pain-free, and happy, even if it means a shorter style for now.
Why Matting Needs Immediate Attention
Matted fur pulls constantly on a dog's skin. It creates a breeding ground for bacteria, hides parasites like ticks or fleas, and can severely restrict circulation. I often see pets in discomfort, and my role is to reset that baseline.
My Approach to Coat Recovery
I utilize a two-pronged approach depending on the state of the coat:
- Manual Detangling: If the mats are manageable, I use line-brushing—a strand-by-strand technique—to tease out knots. This is gentle and effective for saving the coat length.
- Safe Shave-Down: For 'felted' or severe mats, I use professional-grade Chris Christensen Artemis blades. These are designed to separate the matted fur from the skin without nicks. It is the kindest way to give your dog a fresh start.
The Restoration Process
Once the mats are removed, the skin needs care. I follow every removal session with a 4-step spa treatment. This includes a clarifying wash to remove debris, a breed-specific shampoo to restore natural shine, and a moisture mask to soften the skin. For double-coated breeds, I follow this with high-velocity drying to prevent future matting and a full hygiene check, including nail clipping and ear cleaning. My goal is to return your pet to you comfortable, clean, and healthy.
