From Classroom Teacher to Crochet Artist
After 27 years in the classroom, I swapped chalk for yarn. This is my story of finding 'sookoon' in every stitch and building a business with my daughter, Sakshi.
I was recently invited to give a Josh Talk about my entrepreneurial journey. It's amazing to think that students who once learned history from me now order crochet bags.
This feature by Strieo tells my story of starting a business after 27 years of teaching. I resigned from my job to follow my passion and empower other women through my workshops.
This large order came from one of my former students. It's a full circle moment, and I loved creating this collection of mufflers, earrings, and accessories for her.
My daughter put together this video of me with a beautiful order for a student I taught over 20 years ago. It had all the variety I offer in my store.
My story with colors began after I lost my elder daughter. A kind woman encouraged me to paint, which brought purpose back into my life.
Today, I am surrounded by the healing power of colorful yarn. This is why I want to teach this art to so many women, to help heal something inside that we didn't even know was broken.
Colors have a healing power and a soothing influence. This is a glimpse into my story with colors.
For a crocheter, every day is Holi. Come, celebrate with me.
A glimpse into my daily life, juggling household chores with my business. It's not always easy, but I am proud to be doing my best.
A short video showing my journey and the different creations I've made. I like myself, and I love what I do.
About My Journey as an Artist
People often ask if it was hard to leave a secure teaching job at 59. It was scary, but the peace I found in every stitch made it worth it. When I create a piece or teach a class, I am not just making crafts; I am reclaiming my time and proving that it is never too late to start something new.
My journey did not begin with yarn; it began with 27 years of teaching history and social science. For decades, my life was defined by the classroom, bells, and student assignments. While I loved teaching, I always felt a pull toward creativity. When I discovered crochet during the pandemic, it was not just a hobby; it became my path to healing.
I still remember my first order, and I still get that same rush of excitement today. It was not an easy transition. Relatives called my passion a mere 'time pass,' and there were many days I doubted myself. But I had my daughter, Sakshi, by my side, and I had the determination to be my own boss.
Today, I treat every project as a piece of my own story. Whether I am making a complex macrame wall hanging or teaching a beginner how to hold a crochet hook, I am sharing the same patience I once gave my students. My work is not mass-produced; it is handmade, full of labor, and carries a bit of my soul.
I want to show women, especially those in my age group, that you do not have to stop living just because society tells you your role is done. You can build, create, and find purpose at any stage of life. If you are here because you saw my work, know that when you order from me, you are supporting a small business built on honesty and heart. If you are here to learn, I am ready to teach you everything I know, from basic knots to managing your own home business.
