Swimming Tips and Myth-Busting with Coach Nisha
Let’s clear the air on swimming. Whether you are worried about chlorine tans or wondering what a swim cap actually does, here is the reality to help you dive in with confidence.
Let's bust a common myth. Does chlorine tan you? Absolutely not. It's the sun's reflection on the water that causes a tan. If you swim in the early morning or late evening, you can get fit without the tan.
A lot of people think swim caps are meant to keep your hair dry, but that's a myth. Their main job is to keep hair out of your face and the pool. Plus, our academy caps look pretty cool.
Here are some of the core reasons why swimming is such a powerful activity. It's a great cardiovascular workout that's easy on your joints and serves as a form of therapy for both mind and body.
About this collection
If you are holding back from swimming because you are worried about harsh tanning or what to wear, you are not alone. Chlorine does not tan you, and a swim cap is purely functional, not an anti-water shield. Understanding these small, practical realities is the first step to feeling comfortable in our pools, whether you are training for a triathlon or just cooling off after work.
Debunking the Chlorine Myth
I hear this all the time: 'Will the chlorine make me tan?' The short answer is no. Chlorine is a chemical, not sunlight. That tan you see? That is purely from the sun's reflection on the water. If you swim early in the morning or late in the evening, you skip the UV exposure entirely. You can get fit without the tan, and you certainly do not need to layer on sunscreen if you are training indoors or under the shade.
Why the Cap Matters
People often think swim caps are there to keep hair bone-dry. Unless you have a very specific, tight-fitting silicone cap on perfectly, your hair will get wet. The real job of the cap is to keep your hair out of your face so you can focus on your stroke, and to keep loose hair out of the pool filtration systems. It is simple, practical etiquette that makes the pool cleaner for everyone.
The Therapy of the Water
Beyond the technique, swimming is a form of therapy. It is low-impact, meaning it is gentle on your joints while providing enough resistance to build genuine muscle strength. Whether you are looking for an Olympic-sized 50m pool at our Basecamp location on Palace Road or a 25m heated facility in Koramangala, the goal remains the same: a clear mind, improved cardiovascular health, and a solid workout.
Getting Started
If you are ready to swim, you do not need to be an athlete. We have specific lanes for fitness-focused swimmers at all our locations. Just remember to bring your goggles, cap, and swimwear—we do not provide rentals—and ensure you are comfortable in deep water if you plan on using our 7-foot deep sections. See you in the lane.
