Mastering the Pen: Handwriting Workshops
Good handwriting isn't just about beautiful letters; it’s about giving your child the confidence to express their thoughts clearly, without the stress of messy pages.
In this video, our handwriting expert shares three basic rules for cursive writing. We focus on foundational techniques like pencil grip, maintaining flow, and proper spacing between letters to build a strong, legible handwriting style.
About Mastering the Pen: Handwriting Workshops
Most parents come to me worried about messy scripts, but the fix is rarely more pressure or endless practice. It is usually about the pencil grip. I teach the 'Gap Rule'—a simple, mechanical technique to manage spacing and speed—which helps kids stop dreading their notebooks and start finishing their exams with confidence and calm.
Beyond Just Neatness
Handwriting is a mechanical skill that children often find frustrating because it is taught as a chore rather than a form of expression. When a child struggles to form letters, their brain is too busy focusing on the mechanics, which leaves less room for the actual content of their writing. My goal is to automate that process so they can write freely and clearly.
My Technical Approach
We don't do boring, endless drills. Instead, I break down the physical act of writing into manageable parts:
- Grip Correction: We start by fixing how they hold the pen or pencil. Often, simple adjustments here reduce muscle fatigue, allowing them to write longer without pain or cramping.
- The Gap Rule: This is my signature technique for consistent spacing. It eliminates the cluttered look that often frustrates school teachers and improves legibility instantly.
- Fine Motor Warm-ups: Before we write, we do finger exercises. It sounds like play, but it builds the dexterity needed for fluid cursive and print styles.
Who I Work With
I teach students from Nursery to Grade 10, both online and at my centre in Rajouri Garden. Whether your child is struggling with Hindi script or English cursive, the approach is the same. I work in small clusters to ensure I can watch each child's hand movement and offer individual corrections. A clear, legible page is the first step toward a student feeling prepared and capable.
Nidhi Longani
I’m Nidhi. I believe handwriting is a direct reflection of a child's inner confidence, and I don't demand perfection from them. I just help them find the right grip and flow so they can stop dreading their notebooks and start writing with ease.
