Bharatanatyam Classes for Beginners in New Delhi
I teach the foundational elements of Bharatanatyam to children starting from age six, focusing on rhythmic precision and correct posture to help them build confidence in this classical art form.
Here is a look inside a class in progress. I guide my students through the basic steps, or Adavus, using a wooden block to keep the traditional 'ta tei tei ta' rhythm that is fundamental to learning Bharatanatyam.
This is a clip of a student performing Alaripu, which translates to the 'blossoming of a flower'. It is the first piece taught to a beginner, designed to help the dancer perfect their posture, rhythm, and concentration.

About Bharatanatyam for Beginners
My classes focus on getting the basics right, using traditional wooden blocks to teach the 'ta tei tei ta' rhythm. We limit batches to 4–8 students to ensure I can personally check every posture, hand gesture, and movement, giving your child the individual attention needed to master the first steps of Bharatanatyam.
Learning Bharatanatyam is about more than just steps. It is about understanding the connection between movement and rhythm, or the 'joy of dance' as I call it. In my Defence Colony studio, I guide students through the traditional Adavus, ensuring that every movement is grounded in proper technique.
We start with the Alaripu, which translates to the blossoming of a flower. This piece is essential for beginners, as it helps students perfect their posture, rhythm, and concentration early on.
What to expect in class:
- Technique: We use traditional tools like Tattukazhi (sticks) and Manai (wooden blocks) to internalize the rhythmic cycles.
- Small Batches: With only 4 to 8 students per group, I can provide direct feedback on your child's Mudras (hand gestures) and facial expressions.
- Professional Environment: Our studio in Defence Colony offers professional wooden laminate flooring for shock absorption and full-length mirrors to help students align their posture.
- Discipline: We maintain a respectful space, starting and ending each session with the Namaskar salutation to honor the tradition.
Whether your child is taking their very first step or looking to refine their form, my approach is patient and encouraging. I focus on helping them find their own rhythm, ensuring they develop the discipline required for classical dance while enjoying the creative journey.
