Improvisations: Dance as Self-Expression
Sometimes you just need to move. These are my unscripted moments of movement—no performance, just using dance to process, heal, and find my rhythm.
This was a draft from a day I wasn't feeling well and decided to just dance it out. As you can see from the silhouette, it's not about performance, but about using movement to heal the mind.
A moment of reflection. I often have to remind myself that dance is a tool for inner growth, not a performance of perfection. This improv captures that thought, a dance just for myself.
Sometimes, a complete lack of perspective can be liberating. This late-night dance in my pyjamas was about letting go of overthinking and just moving freely.
A simple, moody improvisation at night, playing with shadows and light. These quiet moments of dance are often the most meaningful to me.
Inaugurating my new dance space with a simple, expressive piece. The first dance in a new space always makes it feel a little more like home.
A quiet winter evening spent with the music of Ali Sethi. This is a simple, improvised dance that captures the feeling of a cozy, introspective moment.
A seated improvisation exploring some thoughts on culture and identity. It shows that dance isn't just about big movements; it can be as simple as the story told by your hands.
A birthday dance for my grandmother. This was a simple, joyful improv dedicated to her, showing how dance can be a gift and a celebration of the people we love.
An improvisation from a day I was missing home a little extra. Dance can be a way to connect with feelings of nostalgia and love, even when you're far away.
About Improvisations: Dancing It Out
Here is the truth about these improvisations: they aren't choreographed to be perfect. When I work with you, we don't focus on hitting a flawless count or executing rigid lines. We find your natural flow and use it to process whatever you are feeling. If you feel hesitant, that is okay. We work on techniques to help you express your own story, whether you are dancing in your living room or preparing for a special event.
I have always found that dance is more than just steps. It is a journal. When I post these improvisations, it is not to show off; it is to demonstrate what is possible when you let go of the pressure to be perfect. If you have ever felt like dance classes were too rigid or focused solely on mirrors and body image, my sessions are designed to be a safe space to just breathe and move.
My approach combines Kathak fusion with a deep focus on abhinaya, or storytelling through expression. We do not just move; we connect with the music. Whether we are blending Sufi influences or contemporary Bollywood tracks, the goal is to make the dance feel like yours.
I offer private virtual sessions via Zoom that are perfect for beginners or those looking to reconnect with their love for movement. We can focus on:
- Kathak fusion basics and footwork (tatkaar)
- Developing your own expressive style through abhinaya
- Creative improvisation to build confidence and joy
You do not need a professional studio to start. All you need is a bit of space and the willingness to show up as you are. I provide specific audio cuts, real-time feedback on your posture, and we record our sessions so you can revisit them later. Let’s untangle those knots through movement.
