I hand-craft rare Indian string instruments in my Miraj workshop, keeping our 6th-generation tradition alive with every piece.

This is a Surbahar, specially made for Pandit Ashwin Dalvi of Jaipur. It is larger than a sitar with thicker strings, producing a deep, resonant tone that can sustain for a very long time.

Another custom-made Surbahar. The deep carvings and intricate inlay work are visible, showing the level of artistry that goes into these special instruments.

A beautiful teakwood Surbahar. The rich color of the wood and the detailed floral inlay make this instrument a masterpiece of our craft.

This is a Rudra Veena, one of the most ancient string instruments of India. It has two large gourds and is played standing or sitting. It is a very meditative instrument.

This video shows the initial carving process of a Swarmandal, which is a type of Indian harp. The body is hollowed out from a single piece of wood.

This is a Vichitra Veena, another ancient and rare instrument. It has no frets and is played with a glass slide, producing a sound that is very similar to the human voice.

About Specialized Instruments: Surbahar, Rudra Veena & More

Making a Surbahar or Rudra Veena is a different kind of patience. These instruments need specific, well-seasoned Teakwood and a bridge set up perfectly for Dhrupad-style meend. Every piece I build is tested for that deep, bass resonance before it leaves my workshop.

These aren't just instruments; they are the backbone of Dhrupad and rare classical styles. When I work on a Surbahar, I focus on the soundboard size and the gauge of the strings to ensure that long-lasting sustain. For a Rudra Veena, the challenge is balancing those two large gourds so they sit perfectly when you play.

I personally source high-quality Teakwood because it handles the deep vibration better than anything else. Whether it is a Vichitra Veena that sings like a human voice or a Swarmandal for accompaniment, I don't rush the process. If you are looking for a specific vintage sound or need a replica of an older instrument, let's talk. We can discuss the wood, the bridge type, and the inlay work to make sure it fits exactly what you need. My goal is always that ultimate tone, whether you are a concert artist or a dedicated student.

I am Naeem, and for me, creating a Surbahar or Rudra Veena is about preserving history. I don't just build these; I make sure they have the right soul and that specific meend that an artist needs. I pour my family’s 6th-generation experience into every instrument.
