Red roses are a classic for a reason. This process video shows how I build up the layers of gouache on textured paper, starting with a blank slate and slowly forming the iconic shape and deep color of the rosebuds.

Yellow roses symbolize friendship and joy, so I wanted this piece to feel bright and sunny. This video shows me painting a yellow rose from life, focusing on capturing its cheerful color and the structure of its petals using gouache.

Sometimes, art is the only thing that calms the chaos. This video captures a moment of finding peace in my studio, using a real rose as a reference to create a detailed botanical painting on thick watercolor paper.

Holding the finished sketchbook painting next to the real sunflowers and roses that inspired it. You can see how I translated the colors and forms of the fresh flowers directly onto the page using gouache.

Taking my art outdoors connects it back to its source. Here is the finished rose painting from my sketchbook, held up against a beautiful, serene park path. It shows how nature is the ultimate inspiration for my work.

About Roses: Classic & Romantic Studies

When I paint these roses, I start by arranging a fresh bouquet in my studio to study the way light catches each petal. I use professional-grade gouache on 300gsm cotton paper, building up layers to capture that specific velvety matte finish you see in the photos, rather than just a flat color.
