My system uses UV-stabilized grow bags that provide better root aeration than standard clay containers, paired with a custom soil mix of cocopeat, vermicompost, and red soil. Whether you have a small apartment balcony or a full rooftop, I set up drip irrigation to ensure your plants stay hydrated even when you're busy.
Getting started with an organic garden in a city like Chennai usually hits one major snag: the time required for maintenance. My approach simplifies this. We start with a site visit to check your terrace or balcony load and sunlight availability, then design a layout that maximizes your space.
The core of my 'Grow Your Own Food' package is the infrastructure. I use 220-240 GSM UV-stabilized HDPE grow bags. They aren't just plastic bags; they provide better drainage than clay pots, which helps roots grow faster. To protect your roof from dampness and water damage, I install powder-coated mild steel stands that elevate everything off the floor.
For the soil, I avoid mass-produced chemical fertilizers. My custom mix—a balance of cocopeat, red soil, and vermicompost—holds moisture well while keeping the weight manageable for terrace slabs. I also include a semi-automatic drip irrigation kit. You connect it to your existing tap, and you are set.
What can you grow? Everything from brinjals, tomatoes, and chillies to leafy greens. I provide the initial saplings or seeds and teach you how to manage the irrigation and pest control using organic neem cake powder.
