About Learn to Make Your Own Molds
The biggest issue with store-bought molds is that they are often made with thin, low-grade silicone, leading to tearing after just a few uses. In my workshops, we focus on creating master pieces using high-grade RTV-2 silicone that are sturdy enough for 50+ casts. This not only saves you money on constant replacements but gives you complete creative freedom to cast unique shapes that you cannot find in the market.
Why Master Mold Making?
Many artists start with premade molds, but you quickly realize the limitations. Either the designs are generic, or the mold tears the moment you try to demold a complex piece. When you learn to make your own molds, you stop being dependent on suppliers and start controlling the quality of your art from the foundation up.
What You Will Learn
In my sessions, we cover the full technical lifecycle of mold creation:
- Material Science: Understanding the difference between various Shore hardness grades. We use RTV-2 silicone, which offers the best balance of flexibility for demolding and durability for repetitive use.
- The Math of Casting: One of the most common mistakes is wasting expensive silicone. I teach you the exact calculations to determine the volume you need, so you never waste material.
- Technique: From constructing the mold housing to bubble removal without a vacuum chamber, I walk you through the process step-by-step. You will learn to release complex undercuts without chipping your finished piece.
- Troubleshooting: We discuss how to fix sticky cures and what to do if your master model reacts with the silicone.
Beyond Resin
While these workshops are popular with resin artists, the molds you create are versatile. You can use the same techniques to make silicone molds for concrete centerpieces, Plaster of Paris wall art, or even custom wax candles.
My Teaching Philosophy
I believe in lifetime support. The workshop does not end when the Zoom call disconnects. You get access to recordings, a list of trusted vendors where you can buy raw silicone at wholesale prices, and I am always a message away if you face a sticky cure or a mold-making challenge. My goal is to help you build your own handmade business, not just teach you a hobby.
