The Art in Motion: Behind the Scenes
A look at the delicate process of sand art, where I manipulate light, shadow, and countless grains to bring stories to life, one frame at a time.
Sometimes I get a moment to create a quick, minimalistic animation just for fun. This coffee cup loop was a small experiment I did while my daughter was napping. It shows the simple joy of making things move.
A glimpse into the creation of a romantic scene for a beautiful song. You can see how I use colored sand to create depth and emotion, drawing a princess in a red dress and a serene pond with swans.
I simply loved creating this whimsical piece for a client. The video shows my hand adding details to a girl's face as she floats among flowers, a testament to the dreamy quality we can achieve with sand.
The final touch-ups are where a piece truly comes together. This clip shows me adding fine details and highlights to a floral illustration, ensuring every leaf and petal is perfect.
A scene from a series of songs I am working on, this video shows the process of creating a colorful pond with a lotus and swans. It highlights the layering technique used with colored sand to create a vibrant nature scene.
A work-in-progress shot of an artwork for a beautiful song. This image captures a romantic moment in a window, framed by roses, showing the composition and detail before the animation begins.
A close-up of a romantic scene, showing a couple's reflection in a mirror. This demonstrates how we can play with concepts like reflections and perspectives to tell a more complex story.
A detailed sand illustration of a woman playing the piano. This piece is rich with color and floral motifs, showcasing the illustrative and decorative potential of sand art.
Creating something for myself after a long time. This video shows the process of building up a detailed illustration with fine lines and textures, a meditative and fulfilling part of my work.
An important frame from a sand art video for The Hans Foundation, depicting "Adhyatma" or spirituality. The silhouette of a person in a yoga pose against a blooming lotus represents self-growth and inner peace.
About The Art in Motion: Behind the Scenes
Creating sand art is a process of subtraction as much as addition. I do not just draw with my hands, but instead, I manipulate light on a backlit glass surface, carefully layering grains to find the exact shadow that gives a portrait or a scene its necessary depth. It requires a quiet environment and immense patience to maintain the flow, which is why I often work late at night when the studio is silent and the focus is entirely on the canvas.
Every piece I create begins with a blank lightbox. Whether it is a quick, minimalistic animation like my coffee cup loop or a complex, multi-layered story for a corporate client, the technical foundation remains the same. I start by laying a base of sand, and then, using only my fingertips, I remove or add grains to shape the image.
The Role of Light and Texture
The magic happens when I adjust the lightbox brightness to cast shadows through the sand. This is how I create the illusion of depth in a 2D medium. For my storytelling videos, I often use colored sand to highlight specific elements, like the petals of a flower or the vibrant features of a portrait. The process involves constant adjustment, capturing frames, and then subtly altering the sand for the next scene to create the animation effect.
Why the Process Matters
I believe understanding the process helps you appreciate the final video. When you see the final 4K output, you are seeing the result of hours of experimentation. My husband, Saurabh, often composes the music while I am working through these frames, ensuring the visual rhythm matches the emotional tone of the story. From sketching out a silhouette for a yoga sequence to adding final touch-ups on a floral design, every motion is intentional. If you have a story in mind, this is where we begin—finding the visual language to tell it.
