Behind the lens: Wildlife photography and field process
Fifteen years in the wild has taught me that the best photographs are not taken, they are waited for. This is a look at the patience and the process behind the work.
After 15 years of hearing "your camera takes good photos," I can say it's the patience, the knowledge, and the love for the wild that truly make the shot. The camera is just the tool that helps me share the story.
About Behind The Lens
You might notice the sharp detail in my prints, but that comes from field craft, not just the Canon 1DX Mark II and 600mm F4 setup I carry. I spend days in silence to understand animal patterns so I can frame the shot before the action starts, which is why my prints retain that raw, unstaged feeling that captures the true nature of the animal.
My Approach to Wildlife Photography
Photography in the wild is 90 percent waiting and 10 percent reaction. Whether I am tracking a tiger in the reserves of Bandipur or capturing the flight of a bird in a rainforest, I look for behaviour, not just a clear shot. I focus on understanding the animal’s routine—where they rest, how they hunt, and what triggers them to move—so I can be in the right place without disrupting their natural environment.
Quality and Technical Standards
If you are choosing a print for your home or licensing an image for a publication, you deserve technical excellence. I use a high-bitrate RAW workflow. My prints are produced as museum-quality Giclée pieces on 250gsm fine art paper or poly-cotton canvas. This ensures that the texture of the fur, the mist in the forest, and the colours of the plumage remain vibrant and fade-resistant for over 50 years. I ship these in industrial-grade PVC tubes so they reach you in the same condition I printed them.
Licensing and Commercial Use
My portfolio is open for editorial and commercial use. If you are a publisher, agency, or corporate client, I provide high-resolution TIFF or JPEG files ready for print or digital media. Each file includes full IPTC metadata with location, species identification, and environmental context. This is a usage-based license, ensuring you have the legal right to feature these images in your campaigns or features without the need for a full copyright transfer.
