Behind the Lens: My Wildlife Photography Process

A look at the hours behind every single shot. From pre-dawn starts in Nalsarovar to tracking elusive species in Uttarakhand, this is where the real work happens.

A typical Saturday for me, out in the field from sunrise to sunset. My camera and lens are my constant companions in the search for wildlife.

Waiting for the golden hour light near the wetlands. Planning my shoots around the best light is a critical part of my process to create beautiful images.

On a boat in Nalsarovar, Gujarat, to get closer to the wetland birds. Accessing remote areas is often necessary to photograph shy species in their natural habitat.

Set up and ready in a local birding hotspot. Consistency and dedication are key; I am out shooting almost every weekend.

A moment from a trip to the beautiful state of Uttarakhand. My passion for wildlife has taken me across India and beyond, from dense forests to high mountains.

About Behind the Lens

Capturing the wild requires more than just a camera. It is about understanding behaviour, knowing when to wait for the light, and having the discipline to stay still for hours. Whether I am in the wetlands of Gujarat or the forests of Uttarakhand, my approach remains the same: minimal disturbance and absolute respect for the subject.

My process begins long before I lift the camera. From scouting locations to checking migratory patterns, every shot is the result of planning. I focus on freezing fast action and getting intimate portraits during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset.

My field photography is about patience. Whether you join me for a mentorship session or hire me for a commercial assignment, we focus on identifying perch patterns, learning bird calls, and understanding metering modes to capture wildlife in its natural habitat without interference.

The final output is honest and raw. I avoid artificial setups. For those interested in the technical side of the craft, I demonstrate how to manage noise reduction and sharpening in post-production to ensure your images are publication-ready.

I am Gaurav. My weekends are spent in the field, camera in hand, waiting for that perfect interaction between animal and environment. I believe in minimal disturbance and capturing the wild exactly as it is.
