Authentic visual storytelling capturing the raw energy of Kashi, from the ghats to the ancient, narrow alleys.

A wide night shot of Manikarnika Ghat, with multiple pyres burning against the dark waters of the Ganga. This image captures the scale of the ongoing cremation rituals that make this place a center of Hindu faith.

A worker at Manikarnika Ghat tends to a funeral pyre at night. The low light and high contrast highlight the difficult and essential work involved in these final rites, a core part of my documentary series on Varanasi.

A daytime cremation ceremony surrounded by onlookers. I captured this scene to show the public and communal nature of the rituals, where grief and duty are performed openly on the ghats.

A close-up of a funeral pyre with the Ganga river in the background. The focus here is on the raw power of the fire itself, an element that is both destructive and purifying in Hindu tradition.

Inside the electric crematorium at Manikarnika, showing a different, more modern aspect of the last rites. The composition frames the intense heat and fire against the structure, documenting the evolution of ancient traditions.

Workers and family members attend to bodies prepared for cremation inside the crematorium. This is an honest, observational shot showing the process and the people involved behind the scenes.

An Aghori sadhu performs a fire-breathing ritual during a street procession in a crowded Varanasi alley. This photograph captures the chaotic energy and spectacular displays of faith that erupt in the city's narrow lanes.

About this collection

I do not pose the people I photograph in Varanasi. Whether it is a chaotic street procession or a quiet moment at the ghats, I focus on blending into the background to capture genuine human emotions using only natural light.

When I shoot in places like Manikarnika Ghat, the gear is secondary to the moment. I rely on my silent Nikon Z6 and a 24-70mm lens because they allow me to work without disrupting the rituals or the flow of life. You will not see posed subjects in my work. Whether it is the smoke rising from the pyres or a sudden festival procession in a narrow alley, my approach is to blend into the environment and wait for the story to reveal itself.

My work here is split between two distinct energies. First, there is the raw, high-contrast black and white documentation of the cremation rituals, where I focus on the geometry of fire and the heavy weight of silence. Second, there is the vibrant, color-heavy documentation of the streets, where the chaos of daily existence meets centuries of religious tradition.

I offer full-day documentary coverage for those who need a visual narrative of a project, a journey, or an event. This is not about traditional photography deliverables. It is about a series of images that tell a cohesive story. If you are planning a project that requires a deep, respectful, and observational eye, we should talk about how I can bring that visual perspective to your work.

I am Madhav Ritik. My work shifts between the clean precision of studio lights and the raw, unscripted energy of Varanasi. I do not just take pictures; I look for the stories that unfold when we stop staging reality and simply let it happen.
