Here is some advice for new mums that I wish someone had told me. Remember to be gentle with yourself; you are doing an amazing job and you are so loved.

About Tips From a Mum & Photographer

Most parents stress about their baby staying calm, but the secret is in the preparation. I always recommend planning your feeding schedule so your little one is fed just before you arrive at my JP Nagar studio, which helps them settle quickly into those sleepy, curled-up poses we all love.

Preparation is the key to a relaxed session for both you and your baby. When you are getting ready, focus on these simple steps to ensure the best experience possible.

Preparing for Your Newborn Shoot

  • The Feeding Schedule: Try to keep your baby awake for about an hour before you reach the studio. This usually ensures they are ready for a good, deep sleep once we start, allowing me to safely pose them.
  • What to Wear: Keep your baby in an easy-to-remove outfit, like a cotton top tied at the shoulders. Avoid tight onesies that leave marks or are difficult to change without disturbing a sleeping baby.
  • The Sibling Factor: If you are bringing an older child, tell them they are the star of the show. Bring their favourite books or snacks to keep them happy while they participate in the shoot.

Essential Questions to Ask Your Photographer

Before booking anyone, make sure you feel comfortable with their approach to safety. Ask these five questions:

  1. Safety First: Do they use a spotter? Are the studio and props properly sanitized?
  2. Handling Unsettled Babies: Does the photographer allow time for soothing and feeding, or are they rushing to get the shot?
  3. Rescheduling: What happens if the baby is unwell? A professional should always offer a flexible path to reschedule.
  4. Creative Input: Are they open to your ideas regarding colors or props?
  5. Payment: Understand their terms clearly before you commit.

Finally, remember that you are the star too. Postpartum is a tiring time, so come as you are. My goal is to make my studio a space where you can breathe, relax, and just enjoy watching your little one be photographed.
