Designing for children requires balancing what they want today with what they will need in a few years. My approach in Mumbai homes often involves clever space planning to fit a study desk, a bed, and storage without making the room feel cramped.
Designing for Growth
The biggest mistake I see is designing rooms that are too themed. Instead, I use neutral, high-quality base furniture and wall treatments that can evolve. By swapping out playful bedding, removable decals, or accessories, the room can transition from a toddler's adventure zone to a 10-year-old’s study space without a complete renovation.
Smart Storage & Safety
Every square inch counts. I prioritize high-density storage solutions, such as floor-to-ceiling wardrobes with soft-close hardware or bed-base drawers for linens and bulky items. For safety, I insist on rounded corners for all joinery and child-safe finishes, ensuring that the 'fun' parts—like climbing ladders or built-in reading nooks—are structurally sound and secure.
