Drawing & Sketching Fundamentals for Kids
I teach children to see the world in shapes and lines. Whether your child is 4 or 14, we start with the basics to build confidence and creativity, not just finished drawings.
This video shows two of my students practicing their pencil sketching skills. One is working on a graceful flamingo, while the other is tackling the intricate details of a tiger. I teach them to start with light strokes and build up shading to create realistic animal drawings.
This charcoal sketch is a heartfelt tribute to Sushant Singh Rajput from one of my students. It is a powerful example of how art can be used to express emotion and respect. The student did an amazing job capturing his warm smile.
It is incredible what a seven year old can achieve with focus and guidance. This lion portrait was done with color pencils, and the student showed great patience in layering the colors to create the fur texture. I am so proud of his work.
I believed they could, and they did. This collage shows the amazing pencil color work of my young students drawing a hoopoe bird. It is difficult to choose the best one because each child put so much effort into capturing the bird's details.
I feel so lucky to have students like Aarush, who is just seven years old. This collage shows his landscape drawings using color pencils. His keenness to learn and his natural understanding of colors are truly special.
This powerful charcoal sketch of Lord Shiva shows the beauty of black and white art. The student learned to use charcoal to create deep shadows and soft highlights, giving the portrait a three dimensional and divine feel.
This charcoal pencil sketch of Radha and Krishna tells a beautiful story. The student focused on creating contrast and capturing the expressive eyes and delicate details, all with just black and white tones.
Learning to draw flowers is a great way to practice shading with color pencils. This student did a wonderful job capturing the delicate petals and vibrant colors of a lily, blending yellows and oranges to make it look realistic.
These colorful birds, drawn with pencil colors, show how we learn to blend and layer colors to create a soft, feathered look. The students did a fantastic job making these little birds look so lively and cheerful.
This drawing of a girl with a beautiful braid was a great exercise in texture and detail. The student used different shades of pencils to create the look of hair and the folds of the dress.
About Drawing & Sketching Fundamentals
I do not teach by asking kids to copy a picture. Instead, we break down complex subjects—like a tiger or a flower—into simple geometric shapes first. Once they master these basics, they gain the confidence to draw anything they imagine, even if they have never held a pencil before.
How We Build Artists
Many parents ask me if their child needs to be born with 'talent' to draw. My answer is always the same: drawing is a skill, like reading or writing, and it can be learned. My classes focus on the fundamentals because that is where the magic happens.
The Step-by-Step Approach We start with light strokes and observation. For my younger students, age 4 to 8, we focus on grip correction and motor skills. We use oil pastels and wax crayons to learn how to fill space and blend colors without leaving gaps. For older students, we move into more technical sketching with graphite and charcoal pencils. We practice shading, cross-hatching, and understanding light logic to give their drawings depth and a 3D feel.
Why Small Batches Matter I keep my groups small, with only 4-5 students per session. This is intentional. It allows me to sit with each child, watch how they hold their pencil, and guide their hand when they get stuck. Whether we are sketching a portrait or detailing the feathers on a bird, I want every child to feel that their effort is seen and appreciated.
Building Confidence It is not about making a perfect sketch every time. It is about the 'khushiyan' (happiness) they feel when they realize, 'I made this.' My goal is for every student to finish a session feeling capable and proud. Whether you are in Sector 72 or nearby in Gurugram, I welcome your child to come for a demo class and see if this path is right for them.
