Outdoor First Birthday Cake Smash Photography
Let’s take the celebration to the pine forests. I combine custom picnic setups with the joyful mess of a cake smash to capture those genuine first birthday giggles.

About First Birthday Adventures: Outdoor Cake Smash
These sessions are all about the golden hour, so we plan around the light to make sure the pine forests look their best. I bring the entire picnic setup—teepee, teddy, and the smash cake—so all you need to bring is the birthday star and their favorite outfit changes. Since we are outdoors, we keep the schedule flexible to handle snack times or mid-session naps without any rush.
A Natural Approach to First Birthdays
I believe a first birthday deserves more than just a studio backdrop. I curate a 'Picnic in the Woods' theme that feels authentic, using natural elements like vintage wicker baskets and wood signage that blend into the landscape rather than distracting from it.
My Process
I don’t force poses. Whether it is a curious poke at the frosting or a sudden giggle when they see their parents clapping, those are the moments I am waiting for. I use Godox soft-lighting even outdoors to maintain that smooth, professional quality while keeping the background looking natural and earthy.
Logistics and Comfort
We typically schedule these during the golden hour to get that soft, warm glow through the pines. Since we are working with toddlers, I block out a full 2.5 hours. It is never a race. If your baby needs a feeding break or just wants to explore the forest for a bit, we pause. The goal is for the family to have a mini-picnic experience rather than a stressful family milestone photography session.
The Birthday Film
Every session includes a one-minute birthday film. I edit these to music, capturing the movement and sound of the day. It has become a favorite for families to look back on as their little one grows, serving as a movie trailer for this new chapter in your lives.
